Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life of Patients after Kidney Transplantation in Comparison with Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract: HRQOL of ESRD patients differed depending on the RRT method: top values were shown by post-KTx patients, lower by PD patients, and the bottom ones by HD patients. Along with patient age, increased BP, and BMI, a drop in value of HRQOL in post-Tx or PD patients was observed. When choosing RTT method, patients may use the results of the evaluation of quality of life. A preferred lifestyle, and predominantly the work status and quality of social interaction, should decide the choice of treatment.

“…The scores obtained with the KDQOL‐SF for patients receiving RRT generally show better HRQL results than those obtained in the present study (Kurowski ). These considerations highlight the important impact produced when patients with CKD start dialysis, and show that special attention should be devoted to treating and alleviating the symptoms that may directly affect HRQL.…”

“…[13] KT also confers benefits to society because it incurs less health care expenditure compared with dialysis. [4] However, KT may not be suitable for every candidate, [5] and progressing from the ESRD diagnosis through dialysis to referral to evaluation, wait-listing, and transplantation requires the efforts of both physicians and patients.…”

“…These differences between hemodialysis and kidney transplantation may be indicative of the considerable improvements in quality of life achieved through kidney transplant. The overriding goal for kidney transplant recipients was to protect their graft to maintain their quality of life and remain free from the constraints and distress of dialysis (46,47). …”

“…Compared with other Delphi surveys used to establish core outcomes, our sample size is large with a broad representation of different stakeholders across 79 countries and had a high response rate of 77% by round 3 (46,47). Our findings also included qualitative data to provide further insights into the meaning, reasons and interpretations of the outcomes by participants.…”
