Landslides, which can cause significant losses of lives or property damages, result from several different environmental factors whose influences are very complex. Thus, the statistical multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and heuristic analytical hierarchy process (AHP) are employed in the evaluation of landslide susceptibility. However, the landslide susceptibility maps drawn by these two methods are always affected by subjectivity and randomness. In the present study, we introduce variable weight theory (VW) to improve the MLP and AHP methods, and two novel hybrid models, AHP-VW and MLP-VW, are respectively proposed. VW theory is used to redistribute the weights of the factors in the two constant weight evaluations. This is so that the weights of the factors change with different evaluation units, thereby eliminating the subjectivity and randomness problems. The landslide susceptibility maps of the study area were categorized into very low, low, moderate, high, and very high susceptibility grades. The landslide susceptibility maps of the four models are validated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The area under the curve (AUC) is 0.825 for the AHP model, 0.879 for the MLP model, 0.873 for the AHP-VW model, and 0.915 for the MLP-VW model. The results show that the landslide susceptibility map drawn by statistical MLP is better than that drawn by heuristic AHP, which is consistent with many other current research results. Furthermore, VW can significantly improve the performance of constant-weight single models. Landslide susceptibility maps drawn by the statistical MLP model hybrid VW can be used for regional land use planning and landslide hazard mitigation purposes.

Contamination assessment and source analysis of urban waterways are important for the environmental management of water resources. This study applied an improved water quality index (WQI), which was called WQI-DET (water quality index deterioration) to analyze the Fenjiang River’s (Foshan City, South China) water quality monitoring data from 2016 to 2021. Between 2016 and 2021, the Fenjiang River had the highest WQI-DET value in 2016. Since then, the water quality has shown a decreasing trend year by year. Then, through Spearman analysis, it was identified that the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) are the main factors of water quality deterioration. Moreover a Bayesian model was used to analyze and evaluate the main factors. On this basis, relationships between COD, NH3-N, the natural environment, and human activities were analyzed by principal component analysis. The results showed that NH3-N has been the main factor affecting the water quality in recent years and there were no significant changes in COD and NH3-N during the study period. However, COD and NH3-N showed significant differences in spatial distribution. Meanwhile, human activities contributed 52.3% to the variability in the water quality of the Fenjiang River, and natural factors only 26.8%; factors not considered in this study contributed the remaining 20.9%. Human activities had a more significant impact on the water quality of the Fenjiang River than natural factors.

Fuzzy-Based Ecological Vulnerability Assessment Driven by Human Impacts in China

Human activities have a significant impact on global ecosystems. Assessing and quantifying ecological vulnerability is a fundamental challenge in the study of the ecosystem’s capacity to respond to anthropogenic disturbances. However, little research has been conducted on EVA’s existing fuzzy uncertainties. In this paper, an ecological vulnerability assessment (EVA) framework that integrated the Exposure-Sensitivity-Adaptive Capacity (ESC) framework, fuzzy method, and multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), and took into account human impacts, was developed to address the uncertainties in the assessment process. For the first time, we conducted a provincial-scale case study in China to illustrate our proposed methodology. Our findings imply that China’s ecological vulnerability is spatially heterogeneous due to regional differences in exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity indices. The results of our ecological vulnerability assessment and cause analysis can provide guidance for further decision-making and facilitate the protection of ecological quality over the medium to long term. The developed EVA framework can also be duplicated at multiple spatial and temporal dimensions utilizing context-specific datasets to assist environmental managers in making informed decisions.
