Agricultural production systems are a composite of philosophy, adoptability, and careful analysis of risks and rewards. The two dominant typologies include conventional and organics, while biotechnology (GM) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) represent situational modifiers. We conducted a systematic review to weigh the economic merits—as well as intangibles through an economic lens—of each standalone system and system plus modifier, where applicable. Overall, 17,485 articles were found between ScienceDirect and Google Scholar, with 213 initially screened based on putative relevance. Of those, 82 were selected for an in-depth analysis, with 63 ultimately used. Economically, organic generally outperformed conventional systems. This is largely due to their lower production costs and higher market price. However, organic farms face lower yields, especially in the fruit, vegetable, and animal husbandry sectors. With that said, organic farming can provide significant local environmental benefits. Integrated pest management (IPM) is a potentiator of either core system. As a risk reduction and decision-making framework, it is labor intensive. However, this can be offset by input reductions without yield penalty compared to a conventional baseline. Biotechnology is a rapidly emerging production system, notably in developing countries. The use of GM crops results in lower production cost and higher yields. As a conventional modifier, its major advantage is scale-neutrality. Thus, smaller and lower income farmers may achieve higher gross margin. The main source of environmental benefits is reduced pesticide use, which implies a decreased need for fuel and labor. Barring external influences such as subsidies and participation in prescriptive labeling programs, farmers should focus on an a la carte approach (as opposed to discrete system adoption) to optimize their respective enterprises.

Th e article deals with companies processing and producing dairy products and cheeses in the Czech market. Th e dairy industry is a crucial fi eld among the production of food products. On March 31, 2015 the milk quotas were cancelled. Th e impacts of their cancelation can bring danger for the dairy business but also provide some opportunities. Th erefore it is important that businesses are economically powerful and so are able to strengthen their competitive position. Th is article aims to analyse businesses to identify vulnerable groups of businesses and those groups whose welfare is not essentially jeopardized. Partially, the aim is to assess whether there are signifi cant diff erences in economic indicators among enterprises of the dairy industry (divided according to their size, ownership and subsidy drawing). At the same time the aim is to fi nd groups of dairy businesses from the set which are similar to each other and which diff er from other groups of companies and thus set their position in the Czech market. Over all there were 35 dairy milk businesses analysed in 2013. Th ere were statistically signifi cant diff erences in some economic indicators among corporations considering drawing grants, size, ownership structure and binding to primary production. According to the cluster analysis the large companies with foreign ownership can be considered as a potential threat and may aff ect the position and competitiveness of other businesses. Th e results indicate the endangered position of Czech medium-sized businesses as well as opportunities for stabilizing small businesses which specialize closely.

The aim of the article was to evaluate production efficiency changes of agricultural enterprises specialized in livestock production and identify its determinants. The total factor productivity (TFP) was used to analyse the changes as determined by the DEA Malmquist index. Evaluated sample contained panel data of 440 farms (114 organic and 326 conventional) based on FADN survey in the period 2011 -2015.The results showed very little difference in technical efficiency between groups and relatively negligible changes over the time. About 69% of organic farms reached the productivity growth with the change in TFP of 3.17%. A total of 59% of conventional farms were managed with increasing productivity and the TFP change by 1.48%. Differences between groups were given mainly by Utilized agricultural area per farm, level of Total production, Livestock output, sum of Current subsidies per hectare, and by FNVA / AWU.
