Assessment of BIM Competencies and Correlation Analysis between Competencies and Career Characteristics of FAB Construction Project Participants

Abstract: Currently, BIM implementation in domestic FAB construction projects is in such an early stage that they are benchmarking the BIM implementation method applied in the conventional building sector. As such, in order to enhance the usability of BIM in FAB construction projects, it is necessary to have a correct understanding of FAB construction and to apply BIM in accordance with the characteristics of FAB. This requires defining critical BIM competencies needed by the participants of FAB construction projects in… Show more

“… Conceptual knowledge of digital methods and technologies is more important for the AEC industry compared to the sole acquirement of application skills as it can build the necessary background for developing diverse competencies that emerge in a still advancing environment (Lee et al, 2021;Bosch-Sijtsema et al, 2019;Yakami et al, 2018;Uhm et al, 2017). Obtaining a knowledge acquisition rather than a skill development approach is compatible to proactive skill development, which is critical for achieving adaptability in an advancing professional environment (Ostmeier & Strobel, 2022;Bosch-Sijtsema et al, 2019).…”

“…The second aspect is the application of various digital technologies in the construction industry. These technologies include, but are not limited to, radio frequency identification [17,18], robotics [19,20], blockchain technology [21,22], BIM [23,24], internet of things [25,26], and artificial intelligence [27]. This mainly explores the potential of these stand-alone technologies and their impact on productivity in the construction industry.…”

“…An efficient and successful project depends on the efficiency, behaviors, and skills of project members throughout the life cycle of the project, and BIM-based construction projects are not excluded [4,8]. BIM professionals must adapt and possess competencies such as technological and soft skills [9][10][11]. According to the authors in ref.…”
