Listeriosis is a severe foodborne disease commonly caused by eating contaminated food with the Listeria species. A large variety of foods, especially dairy foods and ready-to-eat products, can support the growth of pathogens. Outbreaks of listeriosis have been related with milk, cheese, vegetable salads, and meat products, and fatality rates are typically around 20% due to listeriosis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention evaluates that 2500 infections and more than 500 deaths are related with listeriosis each year in the United States. A total 125 milk and dairy products were included in the study. Isolation and identification of this specie was done and then confirmed it by gram staining. Antimicrobial sensitivity was also checked. Prevalence of Listeria species were 16.8%, Listeria monocytogenes was 13.6%. Listeria monocytogenes was resistant against Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Penicillin and sensitive Fosfomycin, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamycin. The results of this study showed the low prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la actividad fungicida de los extractos de tres especies de líquenes. De las especies Leptogium cyanescens, Physcia americana y Pyxine aff. cocoes fueron colectados extractos del talo liquénico en el año 2009, en áreas del Jardín Botánico de Cienfuegos, Cuba. La actividad fungicida fue evaluada en hongos fitopatógenos de papa; Rhizoctonia solani y Phytophthora nicotianae var parasitica. El estudio se realizó en el periodo comprendido del 2009-2011. Los compuestos se extrajeron con acetona, se concentraron por rotoevaporación, y se evaluaron a concentraciones de 0,01 y 0,07% en medio de cultivo agar papa dextrosa (PDA), para lo cual se preparó una solución madre al 5% en dimetisufóxido. Los extractos se clasificaron por su toxicidad como: tóxico, ligero y moderadamente tóxico e inocuo. El extracto de P. americana al 0,07% inhibió 100% a P. nicotianae, y frente a R. solani manifestó valores por encima de 50%. L. cyanescens solo mostró actividad fungicida en ambos fitopatógenos a la mayor concentración estudiada; resultados similares se obtuvieron con el extracto de P. aff. cocoes. Los extractos liquénicos se clasificaron como ligeramente tóxicos a la mayor concentración e inocuos a la menor concentración probada.

The present study was conducted to screen antimicrobial activity of three foliose macrolichens viz., Parmotrema reticulatum (Taylor) M. Choisy (Parmeliaceae), (Nyl.) Trevis (Physciaceae) and Dirinaria consimilis two fruticose macrolichens viz., Ramalina pacifica hossei H. Magn & G. Awasthi (Ramalinaceae) growing on barks of areca trees. The lichens were identified on the basis of morphological, anatomical and metabolites (lichen substances) were identified by thin layer chromatography. Antibacterial activity of lichen extracts was evaluated against three Gram positive and five Gram negative bacteria by Agar well diffusion assay. The lichen extracts were effective in inhibiting all test bacteria. Overall, extract of D. consimilis antibacterial efficacy. Marked inhibitory activity was observed against Antifungal effect of lichen extracts was determined against four molds by Poisoned food technique. Among fungi, the growth of Colletrotrichum capsici by lichen extracts. The observed inhibitory activity of lichens could be ascribed to the presence of lichen substances.
