Assessment of 210Po and 210Pb in lichen, moss and soil around Çan coal-fired power plant, Turkey

Abstract: This paper deals with determination of 210 Po and 210 Pb activity concentrations using epigeic moss (Hypnum cupressiforme), bushy soil (fruticose) lichen (Cladonia rangiformis) and surface soil samples in the area around Ç an coal-fired power plant, northwest Turkey. Mean activity concentrations of 210 Po and 210 Pb were found to be 303.9 and 425.8 Bq kg -1 for moss, 161.6 and 259.1 Bq kg -1 for lichen, and 79.9 and 91.5 Bq kg -1 for soil samples at dry weight, respectively. We propose that distance and altitu… Show more

“…Measured 210 Pb activities are high in view of recent literature, even higher than around some coal-fired power plants ( 56 , 57 ), but not as high as reported for some locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina ( 55 ) and Greece ( 47 ). 210 Pb in the atmosphere is the result of the leakage of 222 Rn from soil and 210 Pb indicates the presence of 222 Rn in the air.…”

“…The study was conducted in the Akhisar vicinity in Manisa, which was 40 km away from Soma, where several CFPPs are in operation. Higher activity of radionuclides was reported in lichens and mosses in Çan and lichens in Soma (Sert et al 2011 ; Belivermiş et al 2016a ). Authors studied in Çan stated that this activity mainly resulted from atmospheric deposition of CFPP emissions (Belivermiş et al 2016a ).…”

“…210 Pb is deposited onto the surface of plants due to the deposition of airborne progenies of gaseous 222 Rn 7 , which makes its concentration in mosses high enough to be measured. Elevated concentrations of 210 Pb in the air may be related to different human activities, such as the use of soil amendments rich in 226 Ra (the mother nucleus of 222 Rn) 8 , burning of coal in power plants and other uses of fossil fuels 9 , etc. Hence, the A of 210 Pb in mosses is also a valuable indicator of human impact on the environment.…”
