Impacts of coal-fired power plants for energy generation on environment and future implications of energy policy for Turkey

Abstract: Turkish government aimed to increase the installed capacities of coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) according to several policies and strategic plans published in recent years. Energy production from CFPPs and subsidizing the coal sector were selected for reducing the import dependency as a cheaper option. CFPPs with gaseous emissions as well as fly ash and fine dust, along with ash storage, coal storage, and coal mining operations and water use for cooling of the plants, affect the environmental quality. Hence, … Show more

“…For this purpose, it was first necessary to determine measures and explanatory variables that would make it possible to verify the existence of such a relationship. Based on the authors' experience [27,29] and literature review [2,3,5,6,9,10,12,25,34,45], the set of indicators presented in Table 1 was adopted for analysis.…”

“…Meanwhile, the Turkish government is planning to increase the installed capacities of coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) in the country. Vardar et al, ( 2022 ) have emphasized the impact of CFPPs on environmental quality (e.g., through the gaseous emissions, fly ash, fine dust, coal mining, and water use for cooling plants to name a few) while highlighting the fact that Turkey is already a leading air polluter. For instance, 62% of the current SO 2 emissions in Turkey are resulting from energy production including coal power energy.…”

“…The fight against poverty (Guzowski et al, 2021 ), social transformations and economic development (Ordeñana et al, 2022 ; Vardar et al, 2022 ), the needs of modern society for a quality energy supply (Mercado-Bautista et al, 2022 ; Wahlund and Palm, 2022 ; Wierzbicka, 2022 ) and guarantee the security of the state (Gaspar, 2022 ; Steffen and Patt, 2022 ) and, finally, move toward low-carbon generation sources (Lawrence et al, 2022 ), among other reasons, to frame what today is considered as energy policies sustainable (Nilsson, 2005 ).…”
