Assessing and understanding non-responsiveness of maize and soybean to fertilizer applications in African smallholder farms

Abstract: Highlights Occurrences of non-responsiveness ranged from 0%–68% across sites and seasons. Fertilizer responses by each crop may contrast on a field during the same season. Irregular rainfall patterns strongly limit soybean responses, while less for maize. Maize non-responsiveness greater on soils with high silt and/or cation imbalances. Soybean non-responsiveness greater on soils with high silt, low P and/or low TC:TN.

“…As organic matter in soil can reduce P fixation, it contributes to a better availability of P for crops [77], which can explain the positive effect of compost in the mixtures. Unfavorable soil or weather conditions were cited in 68% of the surveyed agricultural fields in sub-Saharan Africa as a reason why mineral fertilizer use did not increase maize yield [78]. This indicates that the multiple interacting factors affecting crop yields are difficult to quantify in general, and that a careful evaluation of fertilizer practices for each cropping site is necessary to ensure returns on fertilizer investments.…”

“…Meta‐analyses of maize fertilizer responses in SSA show that a large proportion of farmers' fields exhibit low yield responses when blanket input recommendations are followed (Kihara et al ). On‐farm trials by Roobroeck et al () find that rates of inorganic fertilizer applications in line with government recommendations did not increase maize yields by more than one ton per hectare for 19% to 30% of farmers' fields, thus frequently leading to financial losses.…”

“…Second, we assume that maize yields are not affected by farmers that are recommended to not prioritize DAP use. This follows from numerous agronomic and economic studies that demonstrate significant non‐responsiveness of inorganic fertilizer on soils that are overly acidic or have severe nutrient deficiencies (Wopereis et al ; Marenya and Barrett ; Kihara et al ; Burke, Jayne, and Black ; Roobroeck et al ). Third, we are also assuming in our analysis that the soil tests are relatively accurate.…”
