Aspirin and Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: However, the reason for this may be that almost all the lesions were distal and the distance to be covered by the outgrowing axons was therefore not great. Secondary suture should be undertaken as soon as the primary wound has healed and the tissues are free from induration. Primary suture proved an unreliable operation, although some good results were seen. There are important technical reasons why secondary suture is more satisfactory. If, as is often the case, there has been intraneural damage it is much ea… Show more

“…Earlier reports indicated that high doses of sodium salicylate dramatically reduced glycosuria in diabetes patients [16,63,64,114]. Several years later, other authors [114][115][116] confirmed that high doses (500 mg or more) of aspirin by 2 -3 weeks can reduce glycosuria and blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, and in addition to reduced insulin requirements.…”

“…On the contrary, clinical evidences suggest that, based on the anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet and anti-thrombotic effects of aspirin [18,[63][64][65][66][67][68][69], the hypothalamic and pancreatic ischemia can improve by recanalization (increase blood flow to the existing arteries). While an omental transposition (pedicled graft) on the pancreas may be useful against pancreatic ischemia, due to revascularization (formation of new blood vessels), and besides this, provides stem cells from the omentum [14,70,71].…”

“…It has been shown that aspirin and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatories such as paracetamol and ibuprofen are able to prevent or delay the onset of cataracts during diabetes [48]. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatories can lower fasting glucose levels of diabetics and nondiabetics and diminish glycosuria in diabetic patients and alloxan diabetic rats, which could, in turn, decrease glycation of crystallins and, subsequently, related cataract onset [49,50]. Furthermore, mutation to alpha-crystallin mimicking some specific posttranslational modifications can lead to cataractogenesis.…”

“…It has been known for more than a century that salicylates are able to reduce fasting blood glucose in diabetic patients (1)(2)(3). The cellular and molecular mechanism of the hypoglycemic activity of aspirin has not been well elucidated.…”
