Purpose: to investigate the relationship between the background noise level in classrooms and the auditory temporal ordering ability for verbal sounds. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study of a sample of 209 students aged seven to ten years. Noise assessment was performed in 13 classrooms at eight public schools in Belo Horizonte. The procedure was based on the measurement of the the acoustic parameter named equivalent sound pressure level considering empty and furnished classrooms, according to the standard American National Standards Institute (ANSI) S12.60. To assess auditory temporal ordering ability for verbal sounds on students, verbal sequential memory test. For statistical analysis, noise has been categorized by the median value and related to student achievement on the test. Results: with the test results, most students showed normal results and no difference was found related to sex and age. All classrooms had values above the recommended by international standards (ANSI S12.60 and Bulletin 93) and national (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards -NBR10152), which set up appropriate values. By relating the noise with student performance on the test, there were differences, with greater occurrence of changes in the students belonging to the noisiest rooms. Conclusion: the background noise level measured in classrooms are above of those permitted by the standards and there was no relationship between the background noise level in the classrooms and the level of difficulty in auditory temporal ordering ability.

There is an interdependence between auditory and language process, and great performance of one of them contributes to proper operation of the other. The purpose of this article was to write a literature review based in national and international studies systematically. This review aimed to assess the relationship between auditory processing disorders and language disorders. The research used as databases PubMed and Web of Science, from May to June 2014. Inclusion criteria were: articles that responded to the guiding question and that met the theme established by the descriptors. We excluded studies with animals, laboratory, opinion articles / authority, case series and case report. The selection of articles was made through an established protocol for the preparation of this study. For this, we used the following: author, year, location, design, sample, age, used tests and results. The search performed by descriptors and free terms revealed 259 articles in pre-established database. In Pubmed search resulted in 187 studies and 67 in Web of Science. Of the total, 161 were excluded by the title and abstract and 36 by reading the full text. This allowed the analysis of 11 articles. It was observed that children with impairments in language development showed lower performance in auditory tests, compared to those with typical development. Keywords: Auditory Perception; Hearing Tests; Language Development Disorders; Language; Language Tests RESUMO Há interdependência entre os processos auditivos e de linguagem, e o bom desempenho de um deles contribui para o adequado funcionamento do outro. O objetivo do presente artigo foi realizar uma revisão de literatura baseada em estudos nacionais e internacionais de forma sistemática. Tal revisão buscou verificar a relação entre alterações do processamento auditivo e alterações de linguagem. A pesquisa bibliográfica utilizou como bases de dados Pubmed e Web of Science, no período de maio a junho de 2014. Os critérios de inclusão utilizados foram: artigos que respondiam à pergunta norteadora e atendiam à temática estabelecida pelos descritores. Excluíram-se os estudos com animais, laboratoriais, artigos de opinião/autoridade, série de caso e relato de caso. A escolha dos artigos se deu por meio de um protocolo criado para a elaboração do presente estudo. Para isto, utilizaram-se os seguintes aspectos: autor, ano, local, delineamento, amostra, faixa etária, testes utilizados e resultados. A busca realizada por meio de descritores e termos livres revelou 259 artigos nas bases de dados pré-estabelecidas. Na Pubmed a pesquisa resultou em 187 estudos e 67 na Web of Science. Do total, 161 foram excluídos pelo título e resumo e 36 pela leitura do texto completo. Isso possibilitou a análise de 11 artigos. Foi observado que crianças com prejuízos no desenvolvimento linguístico apresentaram desempenho inferior nos testes auditivos, quando comparadas àquelas com desenvolvimento típico.

Introdução: Diversos estudos têm avaliado as vantagens e desvantagens do bilinguismo em uma gama de habilidades humanas. Para se compreender uma língua estrangeira é necessário o desenvolvimento de habilidades específicas que se inicia a partir de uma informação ouvida. Dessa forma, o estudo das habilidades auditivas e fonológicas em bilíngues tem despertado o interesse de diversos pesquisadores nos últimos anos. Objetivo: avaliar habilidades do Processamento Auditivo Central (PAC) de discriminação e ordenação temporal e habilidades do Processamento Fonológico (PF) em bilíngues. Metodologia: 100 estudantes universitários de (graduação e pós-graduação) foram divididos em dois grupos: Grupo Bilíngue (GB-n=50) e Grupo Monolíngue (GM-n=50), de acordo com classificação do "Quadro Europeu Comum de Referência para as Línguas". Foram considerados bilíngues os participantes classificados como: Independente ou proficiente (B1, B2, C1, C2) e que tivessem certificado em curso formal de língua inglesa ou permanência por dois anos em países deste idioma. Foram considerados monolíngues, participantes inseridos nos níveis A1 e A2 ou que não possuíssem competências previstas nestes itens. As habilidades do PF (consciência fonológica-CF, memória de trabalho fonológica-MTF e acesso rápido ao léxico-RAN) tanto do português quanto em idioma inglês e habilidades do PAC (discriminação e ordenação temporal de duração-TPD e frequência-TPF) dos dois grupos foram avaliadas. Os resultados dos desempenhos dos grupos nas diferentes tarefas foram comparados estatisticamente por meio do Mann-Whitney U test (P<0,05) e um teste de regressão logística foi aplicado visando-se observar quais fatores poderiam predizer o bilinguismo. Resultados: Observou-se melhor desempenho do GB em tarefas de CF (português/inglês) e MTF-repetição de não-palavras (português/inglês). Observou-se, também melhor desempenho do GB em tarefas RAN (português) exceto para nomeação de cores, e melhor desempenho do GB em todas as tarefas RAN em inglês. Observou-se melhor desempenho do GB nos testes de avaliação das habilidades auditivas tanto em TPD quanto TPF. As variáveis com mais forte associação ao bilinguismo foram as tarefas de CF do inglês e tarefas de RAN em inglês. Conclusão: Indivíduos bilíngues apresentam melhores desempenhos em testes fonológicos e auditivos, já que essas habilidades favorecem a identificação e discriminação de variações na fonologia de ambos os idiomas influenciando seu desempenho.
