DOI: 10.9775/kvfd.2017 AbstractThe treatment of cancer is highly challenging and contains surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy alone or combinations which have various side effects on the patient health. This study aimed at observing the possible antineoplastic activity of AK27-herbal mixture, a combination of pistachio resin, rhus resin, pollen, Nigella sativa seed, pomegranate skin and olive oil, on experimentally induced Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) in a mouse model. EAC-bearing mice were evaluated by tumor cell count (viable and non-viable), median survival time, percentage increase in the life span and live body weight changes up to 30 days of EAC inoculation. Volume of EAC cells and viable cell count were found to be significantly decreased in AK27 treated groups when compared to EAC control group (P<0.01). The highest viable cell count (mean 15.5x10 7 /mL/mouse) and EAC volume (average 12 mL/mouse) was measured in the cancer group. Administration of AK27 mixture before tumor challenge prevented the EAC development whereas simultaneous administration or after tumor initiation, AK27 significantly reduced the number of viable EAC cells with respect to cancer control group. After the 4th day onwards until the 12th day significant differences were observed between groups in terms of live body weight (P<0.001). All animals in cancer control group died within 12 days as expected. Mean life span in AK27 treated groups were varied from 24 to 26 days with percentage increase in life span of from 100 to 150. The present study demonstrated that AK27-compound was exhibited promising antitumor efficacy in EAC bearing mice. Bu çalışmanın amacı antep fıstığı reçinesi, sumak reçinesi, polen, çörek otu tohumu, nar kabuğu ve zeytinyağı kombinasyonundan oluşan AK27-bitkisel karışımın muhtemel antineoplaistik etkinliğini fare modelinde deneysel oluşturulan Ehrlich asites karsinomunda (EAK) göstermektir. EAK'lı fareler tümör hücre sayısı (canlı ve ölü), ortalama yaşam süresi, yaşam süresinde yüzde artış ve canlı ağırlık değişimi yönünden değerlendirildi. The present study evaluated ethno medicinal knowledge of people in the rural community of São Sebastião, Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. Using semi-structured interviews, 84 randomly chosen individuals informed about the use of traditional medicinal plants in their community, thereby identifying their therapeutic potential, which were categorized according to the ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems). The collected data were analyzed with using the Informant consensus factor (ICF), the Relative importance (RI) and the scores were calculated by using Fidelity level (FL). Forty-six species traditionally used in treatment of ailments were categorized as diseases: digestive system, respiratory problems, general symptoms/signs, nervous system and circulatory system. Lippia alba, Cymbopogon citratus and Foeniculum vulgare had a RI >1, indicating important value to the community. Highest values of FL were: Spondias purpurea, Bauhinia forficata, Punica granatum, Matricaria chamomilla, Stryphnodendron adstringens, Foeniculum vulgare, Mentha piperita, Amburana cearensis and Dysphania ambrosioides. S. purpurea, to treat hypertension, and Amburana cearensis (indigestion) deserve in depth pharmacological and toxicological studies so that they might be included in the National Program of Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapics of the Brazilian Sistema Único de Saúde and safely prescribed by regional health teams, lowering costs for local health system.

Abstract:The plants used in traditional medicine have been considered an important source of molecules with pharmacological activity, including antitumor. The aim of this study was to present a pharmacological description and the phytochemical components related to antitumor activity of thirty plants commonly cited in Brazil to treat tumors as well as offering an overview of approaches that are necessary for the development of herbal medicines from these resources. In the search for studies with these plants, fi ve database were used (SciELO, Scirus, Scopus, Biological Abstracts and Web of Science), with the following keywords: tumor AND Species AND cancer. We consider all the scientifi c synonyms of species available in the Tropicos ® database (http://www.tropicos. org/). We surveyed papers from the period between 1980 and 2008. Twnety one species (70%) have at least one evaluation of a class of molecule or metabolite isolated against a pharmacological model. Most species (60%) has in vivo studies. Of the thirty plant species, two stood out for having pharmacological studies in vitro, in vivo and clinical with positive results: Chelidonium majus L., Papaveraceae, and Aloe arborescens Mill., Xanthorrhoeaceae. Although there is generally a good activity of species presented here, there is a need for further studies in order to evaluate the possibility of developing some byproduct.
