The chapter refers to a general concept of solubility product K sp of sparingly soluble hydroxides and different salts and calculation of solubility of some hydroxides, oxides, and different salts in aqueous media. A (criticized) conventional approach, based on stoichiometry of a reaction notation and the solubility product of a precipitate, is compared with the unconventional/correct approach based on charge and concentration balances and a detailed physicochemical knowledge on the system considered, and calculations realized according to generalized approach to electrolytic systems (GATES) principles. An indisputable advantage of the latter approach is proved in simulation of static or dynamic, two-phase nonredox or redox systems. This viewpoint is in accordance with constructivist teaching, based on the belief that learning occurs, as learners are actively involved in a process of meaning and knowledge construction, as opposed to passively receiving information [19]. Definitions and formulation of solubility productsThe K sp value refers to a two-phase system where the equilibrium solid phase is a sparingly soluble precipitate, whose K sp value is measured/calculated according to defined expression for the solubility product. This assumption means that the solution with defined species is saturated against this precipitate, at given temperature and composition of the solution. However, often a precipitate, when introduced into aqueous media, is not the equilibrium solid phase, and then this fundamental requirement is not complied, as indicated in examples of the physicochemical analyses of the systems with struvite MgNH 4 PO 4 [20, 21], dolomite CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 [22, 23], and Ag 2 Cr 2 O 7 .The values of solubility products K sp (usually represented by solubility constant pK sp = ÀlogK sp value) are known for stoichiometric precipitates of A a B b or A a B b C c type, related to dissociation reactions:where A and B or A, B, and C are the species forming the related precipitate; charges are omitted here, for simplicity of notation. The solubility products for more complex precipitates are unknown in the literature. The precipitates A a B b C c are known as ternary salts [24], e.g., struvite, dolomite, and hydroxyapatite Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH.

Recebido em 16/2/11; aceito em 27/6/11; publicado na web em 16/8/11 CONCEPTUAL PROBLEMS IN THE LEARNING OF CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM THROUGH ACID-BASE REACTIONS.Common student misunderstandings regarding chemical equilibrium are reported taking into account the response of freshman students to some typical questions involving acid-base reactions. Language has been shown to be one of the main issues associated with students´ difficulties on this subject, such as in the case of concentration and amount of substance (mol). Another usual problem was observed in questions involving buffer solutions after addition of a reagent. A number of recommendations have emerged from the results presented in this work as an attempt to enhance the learning of this topic in general chemistry courses given to first-year students.Keywords: chemical equilibrium; acid-base reactions; learning difficulties. INTRODUÇÃOA tendência de uma reação química ocorrer pode ser prevista inteiramente com base nas propriedades dos reagentes e produtos à luz das leis da termodinâmica. Isto sugere que aspectos relacionados com o mecanismo ou a velocidade de recombinação dos átomos, à medida que reagentes se transformam em produtos, não são levados em consideração neste nível macroscópico de transformação da matéria. O sistema atinge uma situação de equilíbrio quando não há tendência de mudança nas quantidades de reagentes e produtos.Equilíbrios químicos são fundamentais para a compreensão de diferentes aspectos da transformação de substâncias químicas como, por exemplo, em processos industriais, biológicos e ambientais. A abrangência do tema faz com ele seja recorrente em diversas disciplinas de Química, quer seja no nível qualitativo quanto no quantitativo. A dificuldade da transmissão de conhecimentos relacionados a equilíbrios químicos de maneira conceitual e consistente é claramente reconhecida por professores do Ensino Médio e Superior.1-5 Especialmente no Ensino Médio, a invocação do princípio de Le Chatelier ("fuga ante a força") é recorrente e induz os alunos a graves erros conceituais como, por exemplo, a noção de que o sistema responde a um estímulo causando mudanças nas concentrações das espécies envolvidas, mas depois retorna à situação inicial para contrabalançar a ação exercida inicialmente.6,7 Muitas vezes a resposta certa a um questionamento é obtida empregando-se este princípio, embora a justificativa seja cientificamente inapropriada. do equilíbrio para a esquerda como resposta à adição de um "reagente" presente no lado direito. Solubility product calculations using the simple algorithms in introductory texts usually produce dramatic and often catastrophic errors because of incomplete dissociation of the salt and complexation by excess ion. Less dramatic but still substantial errors result from neglect of activity coefficients. Solubility equilibria are best taught qualitatively in introductory chemistry, leaving the calculations to higher level courses.
