Arc Plasma-Based Dissociation Device: Fingerprinting Mass Spectrometric Analysis Realized at Atmospheric Condition

Abstract: Fingerprinting mass spectrometric analysis at atmospheric conditions has been realized using an arc plasma-based dissociation (APD) device. Because of its high energy, high temperature, and unique chemical reactivity, the thermal plasma can induce dissociation of neutral molecules or ions produced by atmospheric ion sources. Both even/odd electron (fragment) ions would be generated to provide fingerprinting structural information and molecular weight of the compounds simultaneously. Meanwhile, elimination and … Show more

“…The discharge temperature is relatively high (about 600 °C), thus it was used as an electronic lighter to ignite gas or cigarette commercially. Arc discharge has been reported as an ambient ionization for MS. 25 Inspired by this, we intended to refit the electronic lighter as an ambient arc discharge ion source for its tiny size and "pointand-shoot" manner. However, the arc discharge with a high temperature will ignite most organic substances (which is dangerous!…”

“…In addition, both even (m/z 227, 142, 128, 114, 100, and 84) and odd (m/z 226, 209, 198, 184, and 170) electron ions were generated, which shows the characteristic of the APD-induced dissociation process as were discussed further in our previous work. 29,31,32 Thus, this technique generates interpretable informative mass spectra with strong regularity for rapid fingerprinting of the target polymer.…”

“…The APD device was built according to our previous work . Simply put, a high DC voltage of up to 20 kV was used to generate and maintain stable arc discharge between two mental electrodes under atmospheric conditions.…”
