AR Feels “Softer” than VR: Haptic Perception of Stiffness in Augmented versus Virtual Reality

Abstract: Does it feel the same when you touch an object in Augmented Reality (AR) or in Virtual Reality (VR)? In this paper we study and compare the haptic perception of stiffness of a virtual object in two situations: (1) a purely virtual environment versus (2) a real and augmented environment. We have designed an experimental setup based on a Microsoft HoloLens and a haptic force-feedback device, enabling to press a virtual piston, and compare its stiffness successively in either Augmented Reality (the virtual piston… Show more

“…To stimulate the motor cortex, we chose a method of influencing sensory systems using biological feedback. Sensory cortex stimulation was performed using augmented reality, which is good in terms of patient safety [ 29 ]. We created a controlled virtual environment that visualizes sensory stimuli, the characteristics of which depend on the parameters of human movement.…”

“…90-97 In the future, monitoring data technology is very important besides transmission media. There are more technologies can monitor much data as using web pages, the Android application or using augmented reality [17]- [20]. Augmented reality is a technology that will bring digital content to real world using camera and latches called marker.…”

“…Many developments have been done to make augmented reality easy to use and maximize to work [19]. Nowadays, there are many AR glasses which were known in the market like Hololens by Microsoft, and META by meta corp [17]. This is a sign which means augmented reality will be implemented in a various sector in the future including IoT technology [18], [21].…”

“…Haptic feedback has been studied in many works related to human activities [20], motor learning [21], and gait retraining [22]. Numerous works have compared haptic feedback with other modalities and have reported haptic: to be "less intrusive" than virtual reality feedback [23]; to be better in supporting task performance when compared to visual feedback for lower extremities [24] in gait; not to affect ecological validity of interaction compared with other modalities [25]. In addition, Haptic has been reported as easier to understand and follow when compared to auditory and visual stimuli [26].…”
