Biomineral substances are dissolved in an alkaline mixture of luminol solution and EDTA. Light emission is observed upon dissolution of irradiated calcium carbonate in mollusk and crustacean shells and calcium hydroxyapatite in bones, showing a significantly increased chemiluminescence compared to unirradiated samples. This enables the determination of exposure to ionizing radiation and in some cases even dosimetry. The method described is simple in sample preparation and fast for the detection of irradiated seafood and poultry.

The recently reported emission of photon pulses, in the range of 400 to 600 nm, during the dissolution of γ‐irradiated alkali halides in water, has been studied as a function of temperature. It is found that the rise time, the pulse height, the number of emitted photons, and the decay time are strong functions of temperature in the range 0 to 90°C. The increased number of photons are due to the increased thermal excitation. Thermal stimulation provides an inexpensive and simple method for the enhancement of the generation and availability of hydrated electrons, and on the other hand, is an indirect method for the study of color centers.
