Aqueous flare in patients with monocular iris atrophy and uveitis. A laser flare and iris angiography study

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Purpose: To study aqueous flare longitudinally in patients with Fuchs' heterochromic uveitis (FHU) and for comparison in another group with iris atrophy (non FHU). Methods: A new laser flare meter was used. Iris angiography was performed in most FHU patients. Results:The flare values in the affected eyes in the FHU group were always higher compared to the normal eyes and rather constant over time. Cataract surgery did not permanently change the flare values. Systemic -but not localsteroid therapy caus… Show more

“…It is noteworthy that flare levels do not change with anti-inflammatory Review CME treatment and remain stable over months or years in this entity [7,37,38]. A relatively mild and stable breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier has been reported in FU even after cataract surgery [33,36,39,40]. LFP studies have confirmed the clinical observations on the disease course and helped in explaining the benign nature of FU [41].…”

“…Furthermore, after 1 week, aqueous flare was only slightly increased, and 6 weeks following surgery, eyes with FHU had reestablished their BAB to preoperative levels. This corresponds to findings published by Norsell et al [6], who observed that cataract surgery did not permanently change aqueous flare values in selected cases with FHU.…”

“…Anterior chamber inflammation in this condition is mild with trace aqueous flare and few aqueous and vitreous inflammatory cells [6, 7]. As cataract formation is a common complication of FHU, cataract surgery is frequently performed in these eyes.…”

“…Alteration of the bloodaqueous barrier (BAB) in patients with Fuchs syndrome has been demonstrated by iris fluorescein angiography. 6 Our recent study using laser flare-cell meter (LFCM) analysis has confirmed that aqueous flare values and cell counts are increased in the affected eyes with Fuchs syndrome. 7 However, it is not yet known which clinical parameters, such as patients' age, sex, laterality, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), duration of disease, KP, iris depigmentation, intraocular pressure, and posterior subcapsular lens opacities are associated with these changes.…”
