Applying Semiotic Theories to Graphic Design Education: An Empirical Study on Poster Design Teaching

Abstract: The rationales behind design are dissimilar to those behind art. Establishing an adequate theoretical foundation for conducting design education can facilitate scientising design methods. Thus, from the perspectives of the semiotic theories proposed by Saussure and Peirce, we investigated graphic design curricula by performing teaching experiments, verifying the adequacy of applying these theories to poster design. During the teaching experiment, a matched groups design method was used for assigning 30 student… Show more

“…He recommends that the total word count for any poster should range from 600 to 800 words because a text-heavy poster puts off readers (Driskill, 2010). Additionally, an effective poster should convey intended messages (Yang & Hsu, 2015). Finally, the information presented in posters should be accompanied by an oral presentation to enhance the communication of the content (Rowe & Ilic, 2009).…”

“…Semiotics is the study of the production of signs and symbols to communicate information (M. Fadiana et al, 2019). Semiotics is an activity that involves signs, objects, and interpretations (Yang & Hsu, 2015). The semiotic theory is used as a foundation for developing mathematics teaching materials because we need signs and representations (Suryaningrum et al, 2020).…”

“…The objective of this instruction program was to assist students in designing a public welfare poster. Four weeks of teaching activities were organized for this experimental program, which was designed according to the experiment implemented by Yang and Hsu (2015) and was performed through the following procedures (see Fig. 1): 1) Select university freshman students as the experiment participants.…”

“…Excluding the posters with outlier scores yielded 41 posters for subsequent analysis. The median score was used as the reference point, and 15 students with scores closest to the median were selected from each side of the median, totaling 30 students as the final participants (Yang & Hsu, 2015).…”
