Applications of Piezoelectric Materials in Structural Health Monitoring and Repair: Selected Research Examples

Abstract: The paper reviews the recent applications of piezoelectric materials in structural health monitoring and repair conducted by the authors. First, commonly used piezoelectric materials in structural health monitoring and structure repair are introduced. The analysis of plain piezoelectric sensors and actuators and interdigital transducer and their applications in beam, plate and pipe structures for damage detection are reviewed in detail. Second, an overview is presented on the recent advances in the application… Show more

“…Furthermore, the converse effect can be used in actuation [18]. There are a few materials that possess the properties of piezoelectricity, including piezoelectric ceramics (Lead Zirconate Titanate, also known as PZT), piezoelectric polymers (Polyvinylidene Fluoride, denoted as PVDF) and piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composites, which are frequently used as piezoelectric actuators and sensors for structural health monitoring of various structures [19,20]. …”

“…This will be helpful to researchers, particularly in the precocious stages of investigation, to get a global idea about the research areas of piezoelectric material. There are different review papers in the various applications of the piezoelectric actuator in the literature, which are referenced here for the reader [10,[19][20][21][22][23][24]. The expectation is that this number will continue rising in the future.…”

“…The RBRDO technique has been developed to ensure the performance robustness thus improve quality and reliability in product and process design, while considering uncertainties involved in different stages of a system's life cycle [37][38][39][40][41][42]. In detail, design optimization of piezoelectric embedded sensor patches is considered to realize structural sensing function [43][44][45][46][47][48]. First, a generic detectability measure is defined in this study to quantify the performance of a given sensing system for diagnostics under uncertainty.…”
