Application of Taylor Vortex to Crystallization

Abstract: This study summarizes crystallization technology when using a Taylor vortex ow. A Taylor vortex is created in the gap between two co-axially positioned cylinders based on the rotation of the inner cylinder. Due to its unique periodic ow motion, a Taylor vortex has a signi cant in uence on the processes of nucleation, growth, and agglomeration breakage in various crystallizations, including reaction recrystallization, drowning-out crystallization, and cooling crystallization. In the gas-liquid reaction crystall… Show more

“…Our group has newly proposed a CTC as a novel continuous crystallizer . The CTC is a form of Couette–Taylor (CT) equipment that strongly promotes nucleation by specific flow with high shear force, integrated into the MSMPR equipment in a cascading series. In the CTC, feed solutions were supplied to both MSMPR and CT equipment to flexibly control the supersaturation of the MSMPR.…”

“…Thus, this type of reactor is called a Couette–Taylor (CT) reactor. Due to the unique fluid motion, TVF showed a high mass transfer rate, strong radial mixing, uniform shear field, and molecular alignment and brought frequently highly distinctive results that were hardly obtainable in a typical turbulent flow. Therefore, TVF in a CT reactor facilitated the phase transformation in the precipitation/crystallization several times faster than a turbulent flow in a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR). The effective mixing of reagents and oxidizing/reducing agents in TVF could shorten the synthesis time from hours to minutes . Furthermore, TVF resulted in distinctive results in nanoparticle synthesis.…”

“…This flow pattern is called the wavy vortex flow (WVF) . TCR flow regime has been extensively studied to investigate the effects of mixing and axial dispersion in a number of applications. Aljishi and his co-workers studied the effect of vortex flow in a Taylor–Couette crystallizer on the precipitation of barium sulfate crystals and how different flow regimes could impact the crystal properties . Nguyen and his co-workers employed a continuous TCR to study the effect of Taylor vortices on the phase transformation of guanosine 5-monophosphate (GMP).…”
