Continuous Synthesis of Structurally Uniform Graphene Oxide Materials in a Model Taylor–Couette Flow Reactor

Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO) has proven to be an invaluable material for a wide range of applications. The development of a bulk-scale continuous process to synthesize GO materials has become crucial. In this study, we used a model Taylor−Couette reactor with axial flow to transform the oxidation of graphite flakes into a continuous process. Efficient mixing of graphite and oxidizing agents was achieved via Taylor vortices, which remarkably shortened the duration of graphite oxide (GtO) synthesis from hours to minutes.… Show more

“…The photocatalytic degradation process for every drop of test solution was completed within less than 0.1 S. Notably, the disk was made of polycarbonate, which can be recycled from optical storage waste, making it environmentally beneficial. A Taylor vortex reactor [62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69] includes two cylinders that are arranged in symmetrically and can be oriented vertically (Figure 3a) or horizontally. Typically, the inner cylinder rotates at a high speed relative to the outer fixed cylinder.…”

“…Further on semiconductors, a TCR was employed to study the oxidation of graphite flakes and obtain graphite oxide, a precursor to graphene oxide. In this setup, mixing of graphite and oxidizing agents was successfully achieved via Taylor vortices, which reportedly shortened the synthesis of graphite oxide from hours to minutes 145,146 . The treatment of multi-walled carbon nanotube composites was performed in turbulent TC flow, whereby the vortex flow was able to achieve a uniform dispersion of nanotubes.…”

The synthesis of this material and the level of oxidation reached were tested under different hydrodynamic flow regimes: Couette flow, Taylor vortex flow, wavy vortex flow as well as the primary and secondary instabilities between these.…”
