Application of Design for Lean Six Sigma to strategic space management

Abstract: PurposeThis paper outlines how Design for Lean Six Sigma methods aided a medical device manufacturing company in developing a new strategic space management and approval process for its manufacturing site.Design/methodology/approachThe project demonstrates the application of the Design for Lean Six Sigma and structured Define, Measure, Analyse, Design, and Verify methodology in designing and implementing a process that enables the case study manufacturing site to improve its space utilisation and free up space… Show more

“…This definition supports the notion that various objects have been designed in agriculture to achieve specific objectives (plant varieties, animal breeds, cropping, farming systems, landscapes, decision support systems, agricultural implements, or inputs) (Prost et al 2017). Thus, for this study, design is understood as the structured multidisciplinary work process that aims to create products (Raudberget et al 2022;Roxas et al 2023), images, spaces (Trubetskaya et al 2023), services (Brinkman et al 2023) and digital/multimedia content (Liu et al 2019).…”

“…While there are several approaches to DFSS, design/ redesign projects commonly follow a five-phase method: define, measure, analyze, design and verify (DMADV) (Yang, 2005). This method has been used successfully in a variety of domains, such as to design an online community for internal collaboration within the Bosch Car Multimedia division (Carvalho et al, 2016), to design an integrated registration system that centralized all patient information for a mobile hospital unit (Sunder et al, 2020) and to redesign space utilization for a medical device manufacturer (Trubetskaya et al, 2023).…”
