Application of beet sugar byproducts improves sugar beet biofortification in saline soils and reduces sugar losses in beet sugar processing

Abstract: Improving the chemical and physical properties of saline soils is crucial for the sustainable production of sugar beet and e cient processing of beet sugar. Here, the impacts of the application of treated lter cake on sugar beet bioforti cation under saline soil and sugar losses into molasses during beet sugar processing were evaluated for the rst time. The application of treated lter cake signi cantly reduced K%, Na% and α-amino-N while enhanced sucrose content and quality index of beet root juice.Consequentl… Show more

“…Cultivating sugar beet on September 25th resulted in the highest sucrose% and RS% (14.63 and 14.71%) and ( 10.19 and 10.92%) in the first and second growing seasons, respectively (Table 3). This could be due to that the prevailing environmental conditions under this planting date was in favor of partitioning more photo assimilates towards the storage roots (Alotaibi et al 2021). Meanwhile, the lowest sucrose and RS percentages were produced from delaying sugar beet planting to October 25th produced.…”

“…This may be because the environmental conditions prevailing under this cultivation history 122 E. A. Teama, et al (2021), Egyptian Sugar Journal, Vol.17 ‫ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬ ‫ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬ favored dividing more replicas towards storage roots (Alotaibi et al 2021). While the lowest levels of impurities (%) were produced a result of delaying the cultivation of sugar beet until October 25th.…”

“…An estimated 800 million hectares of irrigated soils worldwide are estimated to be salt affected (Hernández 2019). The extent and severity of salinity-affected soils is expected to be increased as a result of de cit drainage of irrigated soil, rising water tables and climate change (Aljabri et al 2021;Alotaibi et al 2021;Oyiga et al 2018). Under salt stress conditions, plants exhibit considerable reduction in growth rates, increasing leaf senescence and reduced tillering, and during the long-term exposure to salinity the reproductive development is adversely affected, resulting in a signi cant reduction in grain yield (Munns and Tester 2008).…”

“…Production of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris, L.) in the arid and semi-arid regions to replace or supplement cane sugar production (Abou-Elwafa et al 2020;Alotaibi et al 2021). The main advantages of sugar beet cultivation as a promising sugar crop in these areas is its ability to effectively grow and produce a high sugar content and yield in a short growing period.…”
