Application of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys in Engineering

Abstract: The paper deals with the considerations related to the basic properties and application of primarily aluminum alloys and composite materials for different purposes with the focus on the automotive industry. Through the description of the basic characteristics of aluminum alloys, the starting points for their application in different technical systems are given. On the other hand, the advantages and disadvantages of the use of certain aluminum alloys, along with the guidance and compounds and elements whose use… Show more

“…The square ring model made from aluminum was used to make the pink silicon mould owing to its ease of machinability, wide availability and cost-effectiveness [15], Figure 1a. The geometry of the square ring model had an internal diameter (ID) of 121.5 mm 0.1 mm and a cross-section of 6.98 mm 0.1 mm, Figure 1b.…”

“…Due to these favorable characteristics, aluminum is increasingly used in the automotive industry. In the USA, for example, the trend of increasing the use of aluminum lasts over 50 years and it is predicted that by 2028, about 256 kg of this metal will be installed in passenger and light trucks, Figure 3 [15][16][17] Figure 3: Trend of Al use in passenger and light truck vehicles in the USA Also, it is predicted that by 2030, about 10 million tons of aluminum will be installed in electric and hybrid vehicles, which is 10 times more than the current situation. As an example, the e-Golf is equipped with about 129 kg of aluminum, the Nissan Leaf 171 kg, while the luxury model Tesla S has about 661 kg of this metal [15][16][17].…”
