Applicability of Ash Wastes for Reducing Trace Element Content in Zea mays L. Grown in Eco-Diesel Contaminated Soil

Abstract: Among the large group of xenobiotics released into the environment, petroleum derivatives are particularly dangerous, especially given continuing industrial development and the rising demand for fuel. As increasing amounts of fly ash and sewage sludge are released, it becomes necessary to explore new methods of reusing these types of waste as reclamation agents or nutrient sources. The present study examined how soil contamination with Eco-Diesel oil (0; 10; 20 cm3 kg−1 soil) affected the trace-element content… Show more

“…Soil pollution with petroleum-derived products causes disorders in soil metabolism [ 116 ], which need to be considered from the perspective of sustainable development [ 100 ], health of soil and plants [ 29 , 33 , 34 , 96 ] and the feasibility of homeostasis restoration in the ecosystem [ 117 , 118 ]. For these reasons, it is essential to determine the activity of soil enzymes in real time when establishing soil quality [ 19 , 75 , 76 , 102 , 119 , 120 ].…”

“…These adverse changes raise serious concerns due to the fact that soil is the core of human and animal nutrition [ 32 ]. Its pollution not only results in the reduced global production of food but also makes it less suitable for consumption because of deteriorated quality [ 29 , 33 , 34 ], which is deemed to be especially important in the context of dynamic demographic transformations [ 35 ]. Landrigan et al [ 36 ] have estimated 500,000 premature death cases recorded worldwide annually to be due to the effect of soil pollution.…”

“…Petroleum substances affect the chemical composition of crops grown on polluted soils, modifying the content of macronutrients [ 54 , 55 ] and heavy metals in various plant organs [ 25 , 56 , 57 ], and in the soil itself [ 58 ].…”
