Biochar, Halloysite, and Alginite Improve the Quality of Soil Contaminated with Petroleum Products

Jadwiga Wyszkowska,
Agata Borowik,
Magdalena Zaborowska
et al.

Abstract: Investigations into the effective, fast, and economically viable remediation of soils polluted with petroleum-derived products are still relevant. The vegetative pot experiment was conducted at the Didactic-Experimental Garden greenhouse (NE, Poland, 53.759° N, 20.452° E) on loamy sand (LS) and sandy loam (SL) soils. Its main research objective was to assess the effectiveness of biochar (B), halloysite (H) and alginite (A) in the biological regeneration of contaminated soil diesel oil (DO) and petrol (P). “…As hydrophobic pollutants [4], these products are classified as hazardous organic pollutants [5]. They disrupt the stability of ecosystems [6,7], leading to the loss of fundamental functions [8,9], and consequently, deteriorate soil quality and fertility [10][11][12]. Petroleum-derived substances cover the surface of soil aggregates with a thin layer, and hydrocarbons bind to organic matter [13].…”

“…Among the potential means to improve the health of soil subjected to various contaminants, sorbents such as biochar [46,49,51], halloysite [11,52,53], alginate [11], dolomite [54], sepiolite [52,55], perlite [56], zeolite [49,57,58], kaolinite [49], and vermiculite [49] can be considered. Mineral sorbents, both natural and synthetic, are of particular interest to researchers.…”

“…The sixth article also investigated the uptake and bioaccumulation of Cu and Ni metals in cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata L.) as influenced by zinc and organic fertilizer applications [6]. The seventh article highlighted that the combined use of biochar, halloysite, and alginate could improve the quality of soils contaminated with petroleum waste products [7]. The eighth paper described the feasibility of a tax scheme to balance the environmental and economic burdens of large-scale pig farming in China [8].…”
