Apical Rooted Cuttings Revolutionize Seed Potato Production by Smallholder Farmers in the Tropics

Abstract: Potato apical rooted cuttings (ARC) originating from juvenile simple rounded leaf mother plants are a significant new way of transplanting and field growing of seed potatoes under smallholder field conditions in the tropical highlands. The aim of this paper is to highlight the development of the technology by researchers and farmers in Vietnam, Philippines, Kenya and Uganda. The development of cultivars with late blight resistance for which no source of tuber seed was available stimulated the creation of using… Show more

“…These extension class seeds are planted by farmers to produce potato tubers for consumption, both for table potatoes and industrial raw materials. To accelerate the seed supply, CIP has developed a seed production technique using apical rooted cuttings (ARC) and is being developed in Vietnam, the Philippines, Kenya and Uganda [7]. This ARC can be planted directly in the field to produce seeds equivalent to the extension seed class [7,8].…”

“…Currently, Shangi is the most popular potato variety in Kenya due to its table quality attributes and short maturity period (NPCK, 2019). International Potato Center has however introduced new improved climate-resilient potato varieties such as Nyota, Wanjiku, Chulu, Lenana and Unica (VanderZaag et al 2021). Rapid multiplication techniques such as the use of apical rooted cutting (ARC) have shortened the multiplication time of certi ed seed potato (Harahagazwe et al 2018).…”

“…The International Potato Centre (CIP) has introduced a new technique for producing potato seed tubers, namely apical rooted cuttings. This technique is claimed could produce and multiply tuber seeds in a low budget, easy handling, and reduce disease contamination [11]- [13]. Then, this method to be modified in potato cultivation in the field.…”
