Antiviral activity of Distictella elongata (Vahl) Urb. (Bignoniaceae), a potentially useful source of anti-dengue drugs from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: Aims: To investigate the in vitro antiviral activity of Distictella elongata (Vahl) Urb. ethanol extracts from leaves (LEE), fruits (FEE), stems and their main components. Methods and Results: The antiviral activity was evaluated against human herpesvirus type 1 (HSV-1), murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), vaccinia virus Western Reserve (VACV-WR) and dengue virus 2 (DENV-2) by the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) colorimetric assay. LEE presented anti-HSV-1 [EC 50 142AE… Show more

“…Other Bignoniaceae family species with antivirus activity have been previously reported including in vitro anti- Dengue virus type 2 activity, a flavivirus that has a genetic and serological relationship with the Zika virus , of Fridericia sp. [5; 8], Distictella elongate [ 39 ], Xylofragma myrianthum [ 40 ]. Markhamia lutea extract presented in vitro activity against Respiratory syncytial virus [ 6 ].…”

“…Moreover, the structure–activity relationship is not yet cleary demonstrated [ 294 ]. A study on the ethanolic extract obtained from Distictella elongata and its isolated constituents, against human herpesvirus type 1 (HSV-1), murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), vaccinia virus western reserve (VACV-WR) and dengue virus 2 (DENV-2), showed that the most remarkable effect was observed for a mixture of pectolinarin with acacetin-7- O -rutinoside against DENV-2 was (EC 50 11.1 ± 1.6, CC 50 > 500 μg/ml), whereas pure pectolinarin was less active against DENV-2 (EC 50 86.4 ± 3.8, CC 50 402.6 ± 9.8 μg/ml), VACV-WR (EC 50 207.1 ± 9.6, CC 50 449.0 ± 13.0 μg/mL) and HSV-1 (EC 50 314.5 ± 22.7, CC 50 449.0 ±13.0 μg/mL) [ 295 ].…”
