Antiplatelet agents for preventing pre-eclampsia and its complications

Abstract: Antiplatelet agents, in this review largely low-dose aspirin, have small-moderate benefits when used for prevention of pre-eclampsia. Further information is required to assess which women are most likely to benefit, when treatment is best started, and at what dose.

“…It is observed that in high risk population the risk of preeclampsia could be reduced by taking aspirin (33). According to the current UK guidelines, it should be advised to all pregnant females with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to take aspirin during their pregnancy (34), despite its efficacy to prevent preeclampsia, it is never studied in females with kidney transplants.…”

“…Secondary prevention with calcium supplementation to patient at a very high risk of developing of preeclampsia and low calcium intake women shows a halving in the relative risk of preeclampsia (28) Low-dose aspirin has a significant effect in reducing the rates of a number of clinically relevant outcomes, including preeclampsia and perinatal deaths, in women with historical risk factors for preeclampsia (41,42). Reviewed studies did not show any evidence of harm from aspirin therapy (41).…”

“…Aspirin also inhibits endothelial cyclo-oxigenase (5). Six studies (20,35,(41)(42)(43)(44) demonstrated that low dose aspirin, have small-moderate benefits to reduce the risk both of preeclampsia and its complications, when used for prevention of preeclampsia (Table 2). Given the importance of these outcomes, the safety during pregnancy and low cost of aspirin, reviewers recommended that despite the number to treat to avoid one case of preeclampsia still was considered high, low dose aspirin should be offered to high risk of developing preeclampsia women.…”
