Antioxidative Effect of Sesame Lignans in Diabetes Mellitus Blood: an in vitro study

Abstract: Refined and bleached sesame oil (Sesamum indicum L.) contains sesame lignans, mainly sesamin and episesamin, and they are isolated from refined sesame oil. The in vitro antioxidant properties of sesame lignans and sesamol are investigated on oxidative modification of human plasma, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and erythrocyte membrane lipid. Blood samples are collected from diabetic and non-diabetic (normal) healthy individuals. Sesame lignans and sesamol are added at 0.05% and 0.1% concentrations to plasma, L… Show more

“…Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of CVDs, hence why diabetic patients also have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular complications ( Oguntibeju, 2019 ). A study investigating the effect of sesamin on peroxidation levels of diabetic blood samples concludes that the antioxidant properties of sesamin can potentially protect plasma, LDL, and erythrocyte membrane from oxidation, and thus reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease ( Dhar et al, 2005 ). Moreover, sesamin is found to possess cardioprotective properties ( Thuy et al, 2017 ).…”

“…137,138 With respect to plasma LDL control, there is substantial data indicating that lignans, as a class, act as effective antioxidants in preventing LDL cholesterol from being oxidized, rendering them less atherogenic. [139][140][141][142] This finding was substantiated by Kangas et al, 140 who demonstrated that 7 hydroxy-matairesinol (from Picea abies) is incorporated into isolated LDL fractions to protect LDL cholesterol from being oxidized. Surprisingly, the LDL oxidation inhibition efficiency of hydroxyl-matairesinol is approximately 50% of that of vitamin E, whereas its peroxyl radical scavenging ratio is 4:1 versus 2:1 for vitamin E, indicating a less effective/different mode of action.…”

“…Soy lignans (∼2 mg/100 g of beans, effective dose ∼100 mg/day) comprise isolariciresinol (29%; Figure 1F), pinoresinol (21%; Figure 1G), syringaresinol (18%), secoisolariciresinol (16%), lariciresinol (14%), and matairesinol (1%), which are dietary precursors of the mammalian lignans enterolactone and enterodiol 137,138 . With respect to plasma LDL control, there is substantial data indicating that lignans, as a class, act as effective antioxidants in preventing LDL cholesterol from being oxidized, rendering them less atherogenic 139–142 . This finding was substantiated by Kangas et al., 140 who demonstrated that 7 hydroxy‐matairesinol (from Picea abies ) is incorporated into isolated LDL fractions to protect LDL cholesterol from being oxidized.…”

“…참깨는 아시아에서 재배 되는 아주 중요한 유지 종자 곡물로 인도가 세계생산량 의 약 27%를 차지하고 있다. 참기름의 강력한 산화에 대한 안정성은 sesamol 때문이고 이는 자연오일에서 매 우 소량만 존재한다 [14]. …”
