Antioxidant Properties of Cap and Stipe from Coprinus comatus

Abstract: Coprinus comatus, also called chicken drumstick mushroom, is currently commercially available in China. Hot water and ethanolic extracts were prepared from cap and stipe of C. comatus fruit bodies and their antioxidant properties were studied. Ethanolic extract from stipe showed high antioxidant activity (80.6%) at 1 mg/mL. Reducing power of hot water extracts from cap was 1.653 at 10 mg/mL. Extracts from cap showed better scavenging ability on DPPH (57.9% at 1 mg/mL) than stipe ones. Ethanolic extracts were m… Show more

“…Also, ethanol extracts from mushroom species Phellinus Quél and their isolated fractions exhibited antioxidant activity and protected PC 2 cells against oxidative damage [23]. Another study reported that ethanolic extracts from the mushroom Coprinus comatus possessed higher antioxidant activity (47.0% at 20 µg/mL) than hot water extract [24]. A peptide obtained from another fermented mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) showed inhibitory activities toward lipid peroxidation and lipoxigenase activity, which has been used to examine anti-inflammatory activity [25].…”

“…It is well known for its bioactive properties, such as antimicrobial (Zenkova et al 2003), antioxidant (Asatiani et al 2010), hypoglycemic (De Silva et al 2012), immunomodulator, antitumor (Zhao et al 2014) etc. In China, this fungus has been cultivated in a large amount, and its production was amounted to almost 382.000 tons in 2006 (Li et al 2010).…”

“…Several bioactive functions have been attributed to this species along the time, both in cultivated and wild samples, such as hypoglycemic (Bailey et al, 1984), immunomodulatory and antitumor (Jiang et al, 2013) or antioxidant potential (Tsai et al, 2009;Li et al, 2010;Vaz et al, 2011). Mycelia extracts of C. comatus have been also studied revealing antioxidant potential (Tsai et al, 2009) and some extracts proved to interfere with androgen receptor function in LNCaP prostate cancer cells (Zaidman et al, 2008).…”

“…Pers., also known as shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig or shaggy mane, is an edible mushroom species commonly found all over the world; moreover, it is also cultivated in many countries (Li et al, 2010). There are a few studies concerning chemical characterization of C. comatus in an attempt to qualify this species as a dietary option.…”
