Antioxidant nutrient properties and antioxidant activities of Obenetete (<i>Clerodendrum volubile</i>), a nonconventional leafy vegetable consumed in Nigeria

Abstract: There is an increasing interest in the nutritional and health protecting properties of indigenous and under-utilized food resources particularly leafy vegetables that constitute basic sauce ingredient for rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. It has been suggested that an inadequate intake of trace minerals and vitamins in the diet may have a negative influence on the effectiveness of these antioxidant defence mechanisms. Leafy vegetables' inclusion in diets has been shown to be protective against incidence… Show more

“…Zinc is an important component of SOD and its deficiency greatly affects the activity of this enzyme [ 33 ]. Zinc also stabilizes cell membranes possibly by displacing bound transition metal ions, thus preventing peroxidation of membrane lipids [ 34 ]. Although iron overload has been implicated in progression of oxidative stress via the Fenton reaction, it is however a major cofactor for catalase [ 35 ].…”

“…Clerodendrum volubile is among the common leafy vegetables in Southern part of Nigeria and it is well established for its medicinal use ( Erukainure et al, 2010 ). It is indigenously known as Obenetete by the Itsekiris and Urhobos in the Delta of Niger.…”

“…The antioxidant properties of methionine against free radicals have been reported [20]. Erukainure et al [21] and Adefegha and Oboh [22] reported the free radical scavenging activities of the leaf extract. The observed methionine content of the leaf was rather low but may however, contribute to the reported antioxidant activities.…”
