a b s t r a c tAs biomarkers are known to be influenced by biotic and abiotic factors (e.g. gender, temperature), we investigated over a one-year long sampling period, the influence of season and gender on reduced glutathione concentrations and its synthesis in the crustacean amphipod Gammarus roeseli. At the same time, we assessed energy reserves and malondialdehyde levels as toxic biomarker. Results have shown that, in both genders, reduced glutathione concentrations were inversely correlated to water temperature, and higher in females than in males whatever the season. Total lipid and glycogen contents were higher in females than in males, allowing females to have enough energy to assume the reproductive period and maintain high GSH concentrations for detoxification processes. Conversely, females have lower cell damages than males. These differences between genders could induce differential sensitivity in a contamination context, and thus affect the population. Females could resist better than males in contaminated environments, especially in spring when reduced glutathione concentration is the highest.

Background: Plant oxysterols like 28-homobrassinolide (HB) exhibit partial structural homology to oxycholesterols. HB's effect in cell metabolism was therefore investigated using rat model. Results: Oral administration of HB to streptozotocin induced diabetic male albino wistar rats, reduced circulating glucose level to normal level. Serum insulin content was increased by HB treatment. HB elevated the hexokinase (HK) enzyme activity of liver in the experimental animal. Peroxidative damage of cellular lipids was reduced by HB based on quantitative estimates of malonyldialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxy nonenol (4-HNE) content of erythrocyte samples. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of some synthetic plant growth regulators; ß-Naphthoxy acetic acid (ß-NOA) and 4-Chlorophenoxy acetic acid (4-CPA) at 10 and 20 ppm dosages on liver damage, antioxidant defense system and lipid peroxidation in rats. Rats were divided into 12 groups as control, ß-NOA and 4-CPA at 10 and 20 ppm dosages application groups. Serum marker enzymes and biochemical parameters were selected as biomarkers for liver damage. Antioxidant defense systems as SOD, GR, CAT, GSH-Px, GST and G6PD enzyme activities and GSH and MDA contents were determined in tissues as the indicators of oxidative stress. At the end of experiments, the statistically significant changes were observed in the levels of TPRO, TALB, TCHOL, TBIL, AST, ALT and LDH as liver damage serum biomarkers in rats exposed to 10 and 20 ppm of ß-NOA and 4-CPA as compared with controls. MDA levels increased in all the tissues of rats exposed to ß-NOA and 4-CPA dosages whereas the fluctuation in SOD, GR, CAT, GSH-Px, GST and G6PD enzyme activities and GSH levels were observed compared with controls. It could be concluded that the treatments of ß-NOA and 4-CPA dosages may induce liver damage and oxidative stress.
