Antioxidant and tumor cell suppression potential of Premna serratifolia Linn leaf

Abstract: Herbal and natural products have been used in folk medicine for centuries throughout the world. There has been renewed interest in screening higher plants for novel biologically active compounds, particularly those that effectively intervene in human ailments in the field of chronic diseases. The present study has been taken up to evaluate the free radical scavenging activity and tumor cell suppression potential of Premna serratifolia leaf in various in vitro model systems. “…This plant possesses an excellent antioxidant activity [12]. Cytotoxic effects of leaf methanolic extract on liver (HepG2), breast (MCF7) and lung (A549) cancer cell lines have previously been reported [13]. The growth of ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cell lines [14] was arrested by ethanolic extract of leaf.…”

“…[14] Moreover, alkaloids, carbohydrates, amino acids, steroids, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins and phenolic compounds were found in preliminary phytochemical screening of the aqueous enriched fraction of P. integrifolia root (AEFPIR, aqueous extract). [15] P. integrifolia has been reported for its potential actions such as antidiabetic, hypoglycemic and antihyperglycaemic, [16][17][18] anti-inflammatory, [7,19,20] immunomodulatory, [21] cardiac stimulant and cardioprotective, [22,23] analgesic and antibacterial, [24] antimicrobial, [25][26][27] anti-arthritic, [19,28] hepatoprotective, [29][30][31] in-vitro cytotoxic and tumor suppression, [31,32] hypolipidemic or anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-obesity, [3,[33][34][35][36] neuroprotective, [37] antiparasitic, [38] antioxidant, [14,20,29,30,32,39,40] anticoagulation, [41] antitumor, [42] gastroprotective and antiulcer [43] and longevity-promoting. [44] The herbal formulations containing P. integrifolia were also evaluated for their memory enhancing, [45] hypolipidemic, [46] and in-vitro bioactivity effects.…”

“…The alcoholic extract of P. serratifolia leaf has hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity in rats. According to Selvam et al 9 , the methanolic extract of P. serratifolia leaf has tumor cell suppression potential in 3 different cancer cell lines -breast cancer (MCF7), liver cancer (Hepg2), and lung cancer (A549) than the standard drug adriamycin.…”
