“…Isocoumarins belong to an important class of secondary metabolites that display a diverse biological activities 1 such as antifungal, 2 antimicrobial, 3 antitumor, 4 anti-inflammatory, 5 antiallergic, 6 antimalarial 7 and antioxidant 8 effects. A wide range of isocoumarins have been obtained from various natural sources because of their remarkable bioactivities continue to attract and stimulate interest in many research areas.…”

“…Greater mutagenicity was found for this compound when metabolization (S9) was used, very possibly because the monomers were released. The C-O-C link is easily broken and thus the two molecules would be set free: one of semi-vioxanthin and the other paepalantine, which are two naphthopyranones (38). As already mentioned, naphthopyranones have a high mutagenic potential (10), due to their free hydroxyl groups at positions 9 and 10.…”

“…This could be related to the fact that its hydroxyl groups at 9, 9', 10 and 10' are very close to methoxyl groups, which could cause steric hindrance. A resonance can also occur between radicals of this compound, because of their proximity, and that phenomenon would be responsible for the capacity of this molecule to release free radical "nonbonding" electrons, accounting for the high antioxidant capacity of this molecule (38). This dimer is linked by an extremely stable C-C bond, which is very hard to break, even when metabolization occurs.…”
