Antinociceptive, Anti-Inflammatory and Antipyretic Properties of the Aqueous Extract of Bauhinia purpurea Leaves in Experimental Animals

Abstract: Objective: The present study was carried out to determine the antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities of the aqueous extract of Bauhinia purpurea leaves using animal models. Materials and Methods: The air-dried, powdered leaves (≈20 g) were soaked in distilled water (1:20; w/v) at room temperature for 72 h and the supernatant obtained was freeze-dried. The crude dried extract (≈2.4 g) was prepared in doses of 6.0, 30.0 and 60.0 mg/kg, and subjected to the respective antinociceptive (abdom… Show more

“…One of the plants traditionally used to treat gastric ulcer is Bauhinia purpurea L. (Fabaceae), which is native of southern Asia, southeast Asia, Taiwan, and China. In Malaysia, the tree is known as 'tapak kerbau' or 'tapak kuda' , while in India, it is known as 'kachnar' or 'khairwal' (Zakaria et al, 2007). The root, stem, bark, and leaf of B. purpurea are also reported to be used in the treatment of jaundice, leprosy, cough, pain, fever, ulcers, stomach cancer, rheumatism, convulsions, delirium, and septicaemia (Chopra et al, 1956;Asolker et al, 2000;Parrota, 2001;Kirthikar & Basu, 2001;Janardhanan et al, 2003).…”

“…These two actions in turn suppress mediators like prostaglandins responsible for fever [6]. Saponins also have antipyretic activity [35]. The present study therefore suggests that the methanolic bark extracts of T. brownii demonstrated an anti-pyretic activity due to the presence of steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids and saponins that have been revealed to possess anti-pyretic activity.…”
