Antinematodal activity of some Malaysian plant extracts against the pine wood nematode,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

Abstract: : Methanolic extracts of 79 Malaysian plants representing 42 families were assessed for antinematodal activity against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus using a fungal-feeding assay. Extracts of 27 plants from 19 families showed antinematodal activity, while 52 species were inactive. Five extracts (Sauropus androgynus, Eugenia polyantha, Areca catechu, Piper betle and Piper nigrum) exhibited very strong activity against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus at a minimum e †ective dose (MED) of 0É625 mg per ball. Strong antinema… Show more

“…The LC 50 of tuba root, citronella and pyrethrum were not reached, but their LC 20 was 5.7 -8.9 mg ml -1 exposure medium. The remaining 10 extracts were not toxic to the nematode as the LC 20 was not reached (> 19.2 mg ml -1 exposure medium) ( Table 2). Representative dose response graphs of extracts from each of these groups of plant extracts are given in Fig.…”

“…(1). The synthetic pesticides chlorpyrifos and carbosulfan both fell in the slightly toxic group with an LC 50 >19.2 mg ml -1 exposure medium and an LC 20 .of 8.7-12.7 mg ml -1 exposure medium. Deltamethrin fell into the non-toxic groups with a LC 20 > 19.2 mg ml -1 .…”
