Antimicrobial susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from hospital patients

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The incidence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR A. baumannii) is increasing worldwide and is leading to therapeutic problems. We investigated the in vitro activities of cefoperazone/sulbactam, colistin, imipenem, and rifampicin alone and in double combinations against 100 A. baumannii isolates from patients at Songklanagarind Hospital in Songkhla Province, Thailand. The E-test method was used to determine antimicrobial susceptibility, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and fo… Show more

“…e full susceptibility of all MDR A. baumannii to colistin in this study indicated that colistin is still a better option of the drug for the treatment of infections caused by A. baumannii in South African hospitals. However, the issue of nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, colistin-resistance, and heteroresistance shown by colistin monotherapy is a challenge in the management of this infection [30]. e high resistance rate to other antibiotic categories may probably be due to the heavy selection pressure from overuse of these antibiotics.…”

“…Guckan et al and Lowings et al isolated 85.2% and 12% A. baumannii isolates, respectively, from ICUs [27,31]. International Journal of Microbiology Molecular detection of carbapenemase-encoding genes has shown that the production of OXA-type carbapenemases is predominant in A. baumannii [30,32]. e chromosomally encoded bla OXA-51-like gene was detected in all the strains supporting those of other studies demonstrating that the detection of the bla OXA-51-like gene can be used as a supplementary tool to identify A. baumannii at the species level together with additional methods [33].…”

“…Thus, it is clear that the combination of several types of antibiotic groups may be the appropriate alternative treatment for these bacteria. In this context, Tunyapanit et al (36) found that the proportion of isolates resistant to cefoperazone/sulbactam combination did not exceed 3% with the MIC 90 of less than 2 µg/mL, which is absolutely inconsistent with the results of our study where the proportion of isolates resistant to this combination was 86% with the MIC 90 of more than 64 µg/mL. Conversely, our finding concurs with that of this study which proved that cefoperazone/sulbactam-rifampicin combination is the best pharmacological combination in terms of both sensitivity and the MIC value.…”
