Salmonella is the most common cause of food borne infections worldwide. Approximately causing 16 million cases of typhoid fever, 1.3 million fatalities all around the world each year. The primary vehicle of transmission of the pathogen is Chicken meat which is largely consumed throughout the country. Due to lack of good hygiene and proper handling, pathogen is easily transmitted from meat to consumers causing diseases. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of Salmonella in fresh and processed chicken meat through Polymerase Chain Reaction using Inv A gene as a genetic target. Total of 150 samples of raw chicken meat were collected in which 100 of freshly slaughtered samples were collected in pre-sterilized plastic bags and 50 of processed chicken samples were obtained in their packaging, from different shops and markets of Quetta. Out of 150 samples 37 (24.6%) were found Salmonella positive and 113 (75.4%) were negative. In raw chicken and processed chicken the contamination rate was found 26% and 22% respectively. The study revealed that many shops may not practices good hygiene which is making Salmonella a potential threat to consumer's health. To control the foodborne illnesses and to keep the microbial load of raw and processed meat in check, the food safety requirements should be followed strictly in accordance with HACCP (Hazard analysis critical control point)..

Background and Objectives: Antibiotic resistance is an indicator of the passively acquired and circulating resistance genes. Salmonella Gallinarum significantly affects the poultry food industry. The present study is the first study of the S. Gallinarum biofilm in Iran, which is focused on the characterization of the S. Gallinarum serovars and their acquired antibiotic resistance genes circulating in poultry fields in central and northwestern Iran. Materials and Methods: Sixty isolates of S. Gallinarum serovar were collected from feces of live poultry. The bacteria were isolated using biochemical tests and confirmed by Multiplex PCR. Biofilm formation ability and the antibacterial resistance were evaluated using both phenotypic and genotypic methods. The data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: According to Multiplex PCR for ratA, SteB, and rhs genes, all 60 S. Gallinarum serovars were Gallinarum biovars. In our study, the antibiotic resistance rate among isolated strains was as follows: Penicillin (100%), nitrofurantoin (80%), nalidixic acid (45%), cefoxitin (35%), neomycin sulfate (30%), chloramphenicol (20%), and ciprofloxacin (5%). All isolates were susceptible to imipenem, ertapenem, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, and ceftazidime+clavulanic acid. All sixty isolates did not express the resistance genes IMP, VIM, NDM, DHA, bla , and qnrA. On the other hand, they expressed GES (85%), OXA48 qnrB (75%), Fox M (70%), SHV (60%), CITM (20%), KPC (15%), FOX (10%), MOXM (5%), and qnrS (5%). All S. Galli- narum isolates formed biofilm and expressed sdiA gene. Conclusion: Considering that the presence of this bacteria is equal to the death penalty to the herd, the distribution of resis- tance genes could be a critical alarm for pathogen monitoring programs in the region. This study showed a positive correla- tion between biofilm formation and 50% of tested resistance genes. Also, it was found that the most common circulating S. gallinarum biovars are multidrug-resistant.

IntroductionAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat for humans and animals. Environmental contamination of antimicrobials from human and domestic animal feces has been linked to AMR in wildlife populations, including rhesus macaques. This study aimed to describe the eco-epidemiology of AMR within Salmonella and Staphylococcus species isolated from rhesus macaques.MethodsWe followed macaque groups for 4 h per day (2 days) to observe the direct and indirect contact rate and type between macaques and people and livestock. We collected 399 freshly defecated, non-invasive fecal samples from macaques at seven sites in Bangladesh in January–June 2017. Bacterial isolation and identification were conducted using culture, biochemical characteristics, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). An antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) for 12 antimicrobials for each organism was conducted using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method.ResultsThe overall prevalence of Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus spp. in rhesus macaques was 5% (n = 18; 95% CI: 3–7%) and 16% (n = 64; 95% CI: 13–20%), respectively. All the isolated Salmonella spp. and most of the Staphylococcus spp. (95%; 61/64; 95% CI: 86.9–99%) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial. The odds of a fecal sample having antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella spp (OR = 6.6; CI: 0.9–45.8, P = 0.05) and Staphylococcus spp. (OR = 5.6; CI: 1.2–26, P = 0.02) were significantly higher in samples collected at peri-urban sites than those collected at rural and urban sites. Salmonella spp. were most frequently resistant to tetracycline (89%), azithromycin (83%), sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (50%), and nalidixic acid (44%). Staphylococcus spp. were found to be highly resistant to ampicillin (93%), methicillin (31%), clindamycin (26%), and rifampicin (18%). Both bacterial species produced colonies with multidrug resistance to up to seven antimicrobials. Direct and indirect contact rates (within 20 m for at least 15 min) and resource sharing between macaques and people were higher in urban sites, while macaque-livestock contact rates were higher in rural sites.DiscussionThe study shows that resistant microorganisms are circulating in rhesus macaque, and direct and indirect contact with humans and livestock might expand the resistant organisms.
