Garlic is a polyphenolic and organosulfur enriched nutraceutical spice consumed since ancient times. Garlic and its secondary metabolites have shown excellent health-promoting and disease-preventing effects on many human common diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, blood pressure, and diabetes, through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering properties, as demonstrated in several in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive overview on the consumption of garlic, garlic preparation, garlic extract, and garlic extract-derived bioactive constituents on oxidative stress, inflammation, cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, skin, bone, and other common diseases. Among the 83 human interventional trials considered, the consumption of garlic has been reported to modulate multiple biomarkers of different diseases; in addition, its combination with drugs or other food matrices has been shown to be safe and to prolong their therapeutic effects. The rapid metabolism and poor bioavailability that have limited the therapeutic use of garlic in the last years are also discussed.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical efficacy of a combination treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in scalp seborrheic dermatitis (SSD) of differing severity.MethodsOur study included patients with typical SSD who visited the Medical Research Center for Hair and Skin at our hospital. Symptoms were evaluated using a “16‐point scale” developed at the center. Patients who had mild SSD were treated with Pi Fu Kang Xi Ye (PFKXY), those with moderate SSD were treated with PFKXY combined with Run Zao Zhi Yang Jiao Nang (RZZYJN), and those with severe dermatitis were treated with PFKXY and RZZYJN along with garlicin enteric‐coated tablets. Patients were asked to revisit 4 weeks later to evaluate the efficacy.ResultsSymptom scores of all patients decreased by (5.48 ± 2.51) after treatment as compared with before treatment, and the results of t‐test and correlation test were significant (p < 0.01). The scores of patients with mild, moderate and severe SSD decreased by 3.14 ± 1.83, 4.90 ± 1.77, and 8.05 ± 2.21, respectively, after treatment as compared with before treatment. Among them, the changes in scores of patients with moderate dermatitis before and after treatment were significant in the t‐test and correlation test (p < 0.01).ConclusionIn this study, the combination treatment of TCM showed significant efficacy in the treatment of mild, moderate, and severe SSD, and the efficacy was stable, especially for patients with moderate SSD.

In recent years, there has been a more prudent use of drugs on livestock farms and alternative products have been considered, with a view of reducing the risk of the onset of antibiotic resistance. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) may cause disease in poultry, and it is also responsible for human food poisoning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of garlic against S. Enteritidis and to define its Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)90 and MIC50 values. The study was carried out in vitro, testing 26 S. Enteritidis strains identified in laying hens from various farms in Southern Italy. A preliminary efficacy trial was carried out on two strains, S. Enteritidis and Escherichia coli, using a garlic concentration of 10 mg/mL (1%). Later, 26 strains of S. Enteritidis at 106 Colony Forming Unit (CFU) and 104 CFU were tested with different concentrations of garlic, ranging from 10 mg/mL to 1 mg/mL. Based on the results, intermediate concentrations of garlic, from 5 mg/mL to 4 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL to 3 mg/mL, were used to test 106 CFU and 104 CFU, respectively. The data were statistically analyzed. The MIC90 was 4.75 mg/mL for strains tested at 106 CFU and 4 mg/mL for strains tested at 104 CFU. The results highlight garlic’s potential to inhibit the growth of Salmonella enterica ser. Enteritidis in vitro. Efficacy was dependent on the microbial concentration used. In vivo efficacy trials will be crucial to confirm the efficacy of garlic against S. Enteritidis and to assess whether garlic can be used in poultry flocks to prevent the spread of the bacterium in the field.
