The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Salmonella in the pork production chain and to characterize Salmonella isolates. From 764 samples, 35 (4.6%) were positive for Salmonella spp., as determined by biochemical tests and the presence of the invA gene. From these, 2.6, 2.0, 8.8, and 8.0% corresponded to samples collected from farms, slaughterhouses, boning rooms and retail markets, respectively. Salmonella strains were classified into five serotypes and distributed as follows: S. Typhimurium in the pork production chain, S. Kentucky in farms and slaughterhouses, S. Brandenburg in slaughterhouses, S. Livingstone in farms and S. Agona in boning rooms and retail markets. Interestingly, the antimicrobial susceptibility testing indicated that all 35 Salmonella spp.-positive isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent, and 30 were multidrug-resistant (MDR) and resistant to different classes of antibiotics. The enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) analysis showed clonal relatedness among strains isolated from farms, boning rooms and retail markets. The presence of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella in food poses a potential health hazard to consumers.

Salmonella species are causing high morbidity and mortality rates in broiler chickens and other birds particularly young ages resulting in great economic losses. The present study was performed to detect the effect of age and season on isolation rates of Salmonella species from 120 examined broiler chickens with different ages (1-7 days-old and more than 7days-old) in different seasons (summer, winter, autumn and spring). The highest isolation rates of Salmonella species were obtained from broilers of 1-7 daysold in summer (40%) followed by broilers of more than 7 days old in summer (33.3%). The increased isolation rates of Salmonella species was detected from liver of broilers of both ages (1-7 and more than 7 days old). Seventeen Salmonella isolates were obtained in this study from both ages. Serotyping of these Salmonella isolates revealed S. Enteritidis (5 isolates), S. Typhimurium (3 isolates), S. Infantis, S. Bargny, S. Newport, S. Magherafelt (2 isolates) and finally S. Apeyeme in (1 isolate). The most frequent resistance phenotypes were tetracycline (70%-71.4%), from 1-7 days-old and more than 7 days-old chicks and finally ampicillin (60%, 57.1%). From the result obtained by using VITEK2 system, the highest resistance was recorded against Tetracycline in all Salmonella species. All Salmonella isolates showed-associated genes. The invA gene was identified in all Salmonella serovars isolated from chickens of the two age groups, whereas, avrA gene was detected in all the isolates except S. Magherafelt recovered from the age group of more than 7 days-old birds. The tetracycline resistance gene (tetA) was identified in all the examined isolates.

The use of antibiotics in food animals creates an important source of antimicrobial resistant bacteria that can spread to humans through the food chain. Strains of Salmonella spp. with resistance to antimicrobial drugs are now widespread in all countries. The present study analysed the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella spp. isolates in raw chicken wings. Out of 200 fresh raw chicken wing packages 102 (51%) samples were positive. Antibiotic resistance test was performed on 200 isolates out of 336 after being confirmed. All the isolates showed multiple resistance against the antibiotics investigated with the average 0.371 multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index. None of the isolates were resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanate and cefoxitin. Only 2 isolates showed intermediate resistance to imipenem. The major resistance was observed against nalidixic acid (95%), trimethoprim/sulfomethoxazole (92%), tetracycline (92%), streptomycin (90%) and trimethoprim (81%). Even though only 4 isolates were resistant against ciprofloxacin, high percentage of intermediate resistance (92%) was detected. Some of the isolates were also resistant to gentamicin (7%), cefoperazone (2%), ampicillin (24%), chloramphenicol (24%), cephazolin (7%) and cefotaxime (39%). According to our results high prevalence and the increase in antibiotic resistant Salmonella spp. is of concern and constitutes a threat to public health. Günümüzde antimikrobiyal ilaçlara dirençli Salmonella spp. tüm ülkelere yayılmış durumdadır. Bu çalışma ile kanatlı etlerindeki Salmonella prevalansı ve izolatların antimikrobiyal direnç durumları araştırılmıştır. İncelenen 200 piliç kanat paketinden 102 tanesi (%51) pozitif olarak değerlendirilmiş ve konfirme edilen 336 izolattan 200'ünün antibiyotik duyarlılık durumları belirlenmiştir. Buna göre tüm izolatların ortalama 0.371 çoklu antibiyotik direnci (MAR) indeksi ile çoklu antibiyotik direncine sahip olduğu görülmüştür. İzolatların hiçbiri amoxicillin/clavulanate ve cefoxitin'e direnç göstermemiştir. Yalnızca 2 izolatın imipenem'e dirençli olduğu saptanmıştır. Asıl direncin nalidixic acid (%95), trimethoprim/sulfomethoxazole (%92), tetracycline (%92), streptomycin (%90) ve trimethoprim (%81) antibiyotiklerine karşı şekillendiği gözlenmiştir. Her ne kadar sadece 4 izolat ciprofloxacin'e karşı tam dirençli olsa da orta düzeydeki direnç oranının yüksek olduğu (%92) ortaya konmuştur. İzolatlar ayrıca gentamisin (%7), cefoperazone (%2), ampicillin (%24), chloramphenicol (%24), cephazolin (%7) ve cefotaxime (%39)'e karşı direnç geliştirmiştir.
