Antimalarial Activity of Physalins B, D, F, and G

Abstract: The antimalarial activities of physalins B, D, F, and G (1-4), isolated from Physalis angulata, were investigated. In silico analysis using the similarity ensemble approach (SEA) database predicted the antimalarial activity of each of these compounds, which were shown using an in vitro assay against Plasmodium falciparum. However, treatment of P. berghei-infected mice with 3 increased parasitemia levels and mortality, whereas treatment with 2 was protective, causing a parasitemia reduction and a delay in morta… Show more

“…Extracts and physalins obtained from P. angulata have shown a vast range of biological properties [10, 11, 1416, 20, 21]. However, to date, no reports have described the morphological alterations in parasites of Leishmania genus in response to AEPa treatment.…”

“…In addition, antiprotozoal effect of physalins was also been reported against Plasmodium sp . [16] and Trypanosoma cruzi [17]. Nevertheless, to isolate enough physalins to observe the above-mentioned effects, researchers have used large quantities of P. angulata leaves and/or stems.…”

“…species, primarily to identify and assess substances with possible medicinal value (Guimarães et al 2009, Sá et al 2011. However, just a few researches have investigated its cultivation or management, including Souza & Amorim (2009), who assessed the growth and development of the species under water deficit, and Cruz et al (2015), who evaluated the influence of phosphate fertilizer on its cultivation.…”
