“…Pharmaceutical companies have translated the commercially valuable therapeutic properties of the rhizome into products that medical doctors prescribe to effectively treat gastritis and problems with digestion (Yasuda et al, 1988). In addition to the well-known effect of zedoary as a stomachic, this specie has antiinflammatory potency related to its antioxidant effect (Yoshioka et al, 1998) and has demonstrated to be hepatoprotective (Matsuda et al, 1998) and cytotoxic against human ovarian cancer cells (Syu et al, 1998). It is important to note that, as is the case with ginger (Babu et al,.…”

“…According to the traditional Chinese medicine, C. zedoaria rhizomes contain several specific sesquiterpenes that are effective against flatulent colic, debility of the digestive organs, amenorrhea, hepatocirrhosis, cancer, oxidation and human blood aggregation (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). Moreover, its rhizome is generally used as stomachic in Japan whereas in Chinese medicine it has been prescribed for the treatment of blood stagnation syndromes and for promoting menstruation (6).…”

“…1) Recently, Yoshikawa et al have revealed that chemical constituent of C. zedoaria showed vasorelaxant, heptatoprotective, and inhibitory activity of NO production. 2)-4) The zedoary is used to the treatment of the skin disease, however the study of the anti-inflammatory effect of chemical constituents from C. zedoaria has not been studied so far except that of dehydrocurdione (9) by Yoshioka et al 5) Therefore, we tried to isolate sesquiterpens from zedoary and subject on anti-inflammatory test. For isolating sesquiterpens like dehydrocurudione, we used the reddish spot on thin layer chromatography with spraying of anisaldehyde/sulfuric acid as index.…”
