Mangosteen rind has been used extensively to treat a variety of diseases. However, research on the use of mangosteen, especially over the long-term, remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of ethanol extract of mangosteen rind (EEMR) to ensure its safety. The in silico method used the Protox-II web server to test the safety of marker compounds found in EEMR (xanthones, alpha-mangostin and gamma-mangostin). The in vivo method involved the oral feeding of EEMR to rats at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg bw. The researchers observed signs of toxicity and mortality over a period of six months. The study showed a high degree of organ safety, with a safety class of 4 for xanthone and alpha-mangostin and 5 for gammamangostin. In addition, consumption of any dose of EEMR to rats showed no toxic effect on body weight, haematology or relative organ weight, nor was it the cause of mortality in the animal model. However, its use at 200 and 400 mg/kg bw influenced triglyceride, GOT and creatinine levels and caused liver cell abnormalities in rats. EEMR 400 mg/kg bw also showed adverse effects on the kidneys. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the gammamangostin compound in mangosteen rind is safer than xanthones and alpha-mangostin, while EMMR at a dose of 100 mg/kg bw is relatively safe for long-term use. However, doses of 200 mg/kg bw and 400 mg/kg bw require further evaluation.

The genus Garcinia has many varieties of fruit trees, which are found in rural and urban backyards, tropical forests and domestic orchards of several tropical countries. Fruits have a great diversity of metabolites, among which phenolic compounds stand out for their potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other effects, and which have a preventive action on diseases of modernity. This review aimed to associate studies on the metabolic activities of Garcinia fruits and their numerous effects on health risk factors, such as obesity, hyperglycemia, inflammatory processes and dyslipidemias. Scientific articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish were selected, which carried out studies involving the administration of Garcinia fruits in vitro and in vivo, mainly in the last five years. Sixty relevant articles were included in the study. Studies have shown that the Garcinia fruit species can be used in body weight control and prevention of cardiovascular disorders, cancer and diabetes mellitus, among other diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the world influences quality of health in all respective countries, including Indonesia. Data from Indonesian Family Life Survey reported in 2019 showed that the prevalence of MetS in Indonesia currently is 21.66%, estimated with the provincial incidence ranging up to 50%; additionally, the most common components of MetS discovered in Indonesia were poor high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and hypertension. Management treatment of MetS involves a combination of lifestyle changes and pharmacological interventions to decrease cerebrovascular disease. Various natural substances have been shown to govern any cardiovascular or metabolic disorders through different mechanisms, such as triggering anti-inflammation, lipid profile correction, sensitization of insulin reception, or blood glucose control. In Indonesia, the utilization of natural compounds is part of the nation's culture. The community widely uses them; even though in general, their effectiveness and safety have not been thoroughly assessed by rigorous clinical trials. Scientific evidence suggested that cinnamon, mangosteen, and curcumin, as well as their derived components possess a broad spectrum of pharmacological activity. In this review, an enormous potential of cinnamon, mangosteen, and curcumin, which originated and are commonly used in Indonesia, could be treated against MetS, such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and obesity. The findings suggested that cinnamon, mangosteen, curcumin and their derivatives may reflect areas of promise in the management of MetS.
