Antihyperglycemic effect and phytochemical investigation of Rubia cordifolia (Indian Madder) leaves extract

Abstract: Medicinal plants are used as an important source of medicines in pharmaceutical industry. Rubia cordifolia is widely used to cure diabetes mellitus. Present study was aimed to investigate the antihyperglycemic effects of different fractions of R. cordifolia leaves and to analyze its antioxidant effect and phytochemical composition. Male albino mice were randomly distributed into seven groups (n = 7). Group-I was normal control, group-II was Alloxan (100 mg/kg)-induced diabetic control, and group-III was standa… Show more

“…R. cordifolia's antidiabetic properties are linked to antioxidant activity and phytochemical components such as phenolics and flavonoids, particularly mangiferine and purpurine. Tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids, and saponins, among other phytochemicals, may have a synergistic effect 40 . Rubia cordifolia plays a vital role in treating atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular disorders which was confirmed based on their proven scientific evidence of antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activities.…”

“…It is herbaceous climbing plant with thin red bark, commonly known as majith, belonging to the family of Rubiaceae [74]. Further investigations showed that certain solvent fractions like ethyl acetate and and n-butanol fractions have significant antidiabetic effect [75]. Tripathi YB et al found Rubiadin, dihydroxy anthraquinone, is main active chemical constituent has the antioxidant activity.…”
