Antifungal activity of silver nanoparticles and clotrimazole against Candida spp.

Abstract: The aim of present study was calculate the Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of silver nanoparticles and clotrimazole for Candida species and their interaction by the adaptation of standarized methods. The MICs values of clotrimazole were 9 E -04 -3 E -03 ug/ml, 0.1-0.6 ug/ml, 3 E -03 -0.1 ug/ml and 3 E -03 -0.3 ug/ml for Candida albicans susceptible to fluconazole, Candida albicans resistance to fluconazole, Candida krusei and Candida parapsilosis respectively. The MICs values of silver nanoparticles w… Show more

“…We also observed potent fungicidal effects of AgNPs at low MFCs, consistent with the values of 0.25µg/mL and 0.5µg/mL reported by Zhou et al (2021). Contrastingly, Meneses et al (2022) reported that AgNPs had a weaker antifungal effect and higher MICs (26.5-106µg/mL) of AgNPs. These opposite findings are likely due to the lack of a standardized method for determining the antifungal effect of AgNPs.…”

“…These important changes in the membrane are acknowledged by the formation of “pits” on its surface and eventually provide for the formation of pores and cell death. 190 Fluconazole in combination with AgNPs showed the maximum suppression of C. albicans , followed by P. glomerata and Trichoderma sp. 191 Tineapedis (a common skin infection) and nail mycosis (a nail infection) are very widespread in adults, induced by the skin disease mold Trichophyton .…”

“…However, fungi may develop resistance against AgNPs. In such cases, elimination of the resistant strain would be less likely to be potentiated by AgNP–antifungal agent combination therapy [ 22 ]. It has been demonstrated that calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH) 2 ] and 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) gels displayed greater antifungal effects than AgNP gel against C. albicans [ 23 ].…”
