Psidium myrsinites DC. is species known as "araçá", from the Cerrado (savanna) biome in Brazil. It is commonly used as a medicinal plant in the treatment of diarrhea because of its astringent properties. The aims of this study were to carry out phytochemical screening with an exploratory purpose; to investigate toxicity by brine shrimp (Artemia salina) lethality bioassay; and to evaluate antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration of the essential oil, acetonic and ethanolic crude extracts, and the fractions obtained with organic solvents of Psidium myrsinites DC. leaves. The phytochemical profile determined the major classes of secondary metabolites present as phenolic compounds (tannins, coumarins, flavonoids, anthraquinone glycosides and terpene compounds). The essential oil and hexane fraction demonstrated a level of strong and mild toxicity respectively, thus encouraging further research with isolated substances from them. The crude ethanolic and acetonic extracts, and hexane fractions, chloroform intermediary, ethyl acetate and aqueous fraction from crude acetonic extract showed the best inhibitory effect on bacterial growth of Gram-positive bacteria with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging between 62.5 and 250 µg.mL -1 . However, the presence of secondary compounds such as tannins, flavonoids and terpenes is probably associated with the inhibitory effect on tested microorganisms, which could justify the medicinal use of the leaves of this species.

Recebido em 3/10/11; aceito em 26/2/12; publicado na web em 2/7/12The phytochemical study of hexane/ethyl ether (1:1) extract of the roots of M. imbricata, Celastraceae, resulted in the isolation and characterization of six known triterpenes: 11α-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-3-one, previously isolated from this species besides, 3β,11α-di-hydroxylup-20(29)-ene, 3,7-dioxofriedelane, 3-oxo-29-hydroxyfriedelane, tingenone and 6-oxo-tingenol. The chemical structures of these triterpenes were established by spectrometric data (IR, 1 H and 13 C NMR) and through comparison with literature data. The hexane/ethyl ether (1:1), ethyl acetate and methanol extracts, and 11α-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-3-one, tingenone and 6-oxo-tingenol, showed antimicrobial properties on in vitro assays. All extracts and triterpenes, except 3β,11α-di-hydroxylup-20(29)-ene, presented toxicity demonstrated by the larvicidal effect test using Artemia salina.

Plants have been used in traditional medicine for centuries as antibacterial and antifungal agents. Taraxacum spp., commonly known as dandelion, is a well-known herbal remedy with a long history; however, limited scientific information is available to explain its traditional use. This review aims to provide current information and a general overview of the available literature concerning the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the Taraxacum genus to support its potential as a powerful herbal medicine. Though Taraxacum has demonstrated that it is capable of inhibiting the growth of a wide range of bacteria and fungi, the technical aspects of methodology lack standardization, and, therefore, the overall results of processing are difficult to compare between studies. Phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity in Taraxacum are neither directly related, nor does the published data provide sufficient information for identifying the group of unique extraction conditions that are optimal against specific microorganisms. Antimicrobial research indicates that this plant is a promising species for treating several common infections in humans, animals, and plants.
