Anti-oxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase activities of <i>Zygophyllum album</i>

Abstract: <p class="Abstract">The present study was carried out to explore the anti-acetylcholinesterase activity and anti-oxidant effect as well as content of phenolic compounds of various extracts from Zygophyllum album. It was observed that dichloromethane and ethanol extracts were endowed with a powerful anti-acetylcholinesterase activity with IC50 values of 40 and 58 µg/mL, respectively. These two extracts exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50</sub&g… Show more

“…According to Mnafgui et al (2014) the extract from leaves and flowers of Z. album exhibited antidiabetic properties through delaying carbohydrates and lipids digestion and absorption, while Ksouri et al (2013) reported that the shoot extracts displayed appreciable antioxidant, antiinflammatory and anticancer activities. Extracts from the same species also showed a considerable antiacetylcholinesterase activity (IC 50 values = 40-58 μg/mL), and thus can be suggested in pharmaceutical formulations against Alzheimer's disease (Kchaou et al, 2016). Furthermore, according to the same study (Kchaou et al, 2016), the essential oil of this plant exerts high anti-bacterial activity against Grampositive bacteria.…”

“…Scientific evaluation of these plants is necessary to find out the novel compounds. Among the huge number of plants, only a limited numbers are screened (Nile and Khobragade, 2011;Kchaou et al, 2015;Nile and Park, 2015). These studies mainly focus on the individual plant.…”

“…As regard β-carotene bleaching system, linoleic acid produces hydroperoxides as free radicals during incubation at 50°C . Beta-carotene undergoes rapid discoloration in the absence of anti-oxidants, while, the presence of antioxidants in the extracts will minimize its oxidation by the hydroperoxides (Kchaou et al, 2016). This hydroperoxides formed in this system will be neutralized by anti-oxidants.…”
