Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Tanzawaic Acid Derivatives from a Marine-Derived Fungus Penicillium steckii 108YD142

Abstract: Chemical investigation of a marine-derived fungus, Penicillium steckii 108YD142, resulted in the discovery of a new tanzawaic acid derivative, tanzawaic acid Q (1), together with four known analogues, tanzawaic acids A (2), C (3), D (4), and K (5). The structures of tanzawaic acid derivatives 1–5 were determined by the detailed analysis of 1D, 2D NMR and LC-MS data, along with chemical methods and literature data analysis. These compounds significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production and the new tanzawa… Show more

“…ATF3 promotion of apoptosis, a key process in prevention of growth and invasion, may result from KLF6 induction of ATF3 [144] or through its activation of p53 [145]. We found a significant downregulation of KLF6 in the centre KE (p = 0.02) and interestingly, ATF3 has been shown to mediate apoptosis by anti-cancer therapies [146148]. Also in the microdissected KE, UGT3A2 , a member of the UDP-glycosyltransferase superfamily that plays a role in drug metabolism and which may affect detoxification of therapeutic drugs, was found to be strongly under-expressed [149, 150].…”

“…Other strains from extreme conditions also raised the great interest to mine novel structures, such as halotolerant or extremophilic strains (Lu et al 2008; Stierle et al 2012),deep sea-derived strains (Li et al 2013), and marine animal-derived strains (Qi et al 2013). The resulted compounds cover different biological activities including cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines (Li et al 2014; Zhang et al 2016), potent inhibitory activity against bacteria (Zheng et al 2016), antifungal activity (Daengrot et al 2015), inhibiting LPS-induced inflammation (Shin et al 2016), and inhibitory activity against protease (Sun et al 2014). In comparison to the above environment-derived Penicillium strains, research on the Penicillium strains from Tibetan Plateau is limited.…”

“…Predominantly associated with endowing the host animal with some form of defensive mechanism/s against pathogens or predators, this topic has been elegantly and thoroughly reviewed by Kaltenpoth and coworkers as well as others. 14 It is perhaps instructive to note that a great many of the works detailed in these reviews have focused on insect-microbe symbioses. This is perhaps not at all surprising when one considers that insects constitute the largest group of fauna on Earth accounting for 75% of all known animal species; it is estimated that > 1 million types of insects, many of which are yet to be characterized, currently inhabit the planet.…”
