Abstract: Keratometric readings and anterior and posterior elevation values of rabbits were similar to human; however, corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth (ACD) values were lower than humans.

“…These data also suggest that 5% NaCl is more efficacious at decreasing corneal thickness in rabbits vs dogs and possibly due to differences in corneal structure and cellular function between these two species. For example, median central corneal thickness is reported to be approximately 380 μm in rabbits and is thus about 2/3 as thick as the canine central cornea . This may result in increased penetration or improved efficacy of 5% NaCl in rabbits vs dogs due to differences in mass transport properties or intrinsic hygroscopic attributes of the stromal elements .…”

“…We consider the following causes: (i) The follow-up time was not long enough; (ii) rabbits are not an optimal model for endothelial dysfunction. The rabbit cornea is too thin compared with the human cornea, and the anterior chamber is 2.08 -0.16 mm [32], which is too shallow for DMEK surgery to be performed without significant modification [33]; (iii) Descemet's membrane is the basement membrane of the corneal endothelium and helps keep the endothelial monolayer in place to maintain corneal clarity [34]. Rabbits regenerate their endothelium.…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6][7] It has also been thoroughly compared to other technologies in human medicine, including scanning slit-topography, optical coherence tomography, ultrasound pachymetry, and A-scan ultrasound. 6,[8][9][10][11] The Pentacam has been used to evaluate central corneal thickness (CCT) in cats and dogs 12,13 as well as anterior chamber parameters in normal New Zealand white rabbits, 14 but has not yet been utilized to describe other corneal and anterior chamber parameters in normal canine patients. While this instrument has the ability to evaluate an extensive variety of parameters of the cornea, anterior chamber, and lens, only a subset will be the focus of the current study.…”
