Anisotropic magnetoresistance in manganites: experiment and theory

Abstract: We present measurements of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of La(0.75)Sr(0.25)MnO(3) films deposited on (001) SrTiO(3) substrates, and a model that describes the experimental results. The model, based on the electronic structure of manganites plus the spin-orbit coupling, correctly accounts for the dependence of the AMR on the direction of the current to the crystalline axes. We measure an AMR of the order of 10(-3) for the current I parallel to the [100] axis of the crystal and vanishing AMR for I Show more

“…Indeed, in AMR, the variation of the resistivity depends on the orientation of the magnetization M with respect to both the current density J and the crystal axes. From the angular dependence of the AMR [10,11], information on the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) [12] and the magneto-elastic coupling (Jahn-Teller distortions) can be obtained. However, up to now, reports about the possibility to electrostatically modulate the AMR amplitude have not been presented.…”

“…ρ av is the average resistivity and defined as ρ av ¼(1/3)ρ J þ (2/3)ρ ? [18]. The dependence of resistivity on the angle θ follows a cos 2 (θ) dependence for all the films and over the whole temperature range studied, where θ¼01 corresponds to the configuration where H is perpendicular to the direction of J.…”
